The Rhythm of Sevillanas

A professional bailaora — a Sevillian flamenco dancer — meets you at your accommodation for a private masterclass in sevillanas, the paired folk dance danced at every caseta on the fairground. In about an hour you'll learn the first of the four coplas — the foundational verse, and the one everyone starts with. Enough to hold your own on a caseta floor.

Each sevillana runs about a minute and a half and follows a fixed choreography — four coplas, each with the same four movements: paseíllo, pasada, careo, remate. Because it's fixed, anyone who knows it can dance with anyone else who knows it, anywhere in Andalusia. Sevillanos learn it as children; visitors either sit out or step on toes. An hour with a professional dancer at your hotel is what closes that gap. Whether you're a beginner or have some dance experience, the instructor tailors the class to your level.
