What is this?

This full-day experience begins deep in the Douro Valley — not among the cellars, but on the terraced hillsides where local bees turn the same landscape into honey. You'll meet a local beekeeper who has tended hives here for generations, suiting up to step inside a working apiary before tasting a range of honeys shaped by native flora — heather, chestnut, rosemary, and wildflower among them, each with its own character. Lunch follows at a traditional farm belonging to a leading local producer, sampling a range of regional dishes. You'll then carry on to a scenic viewpoint over the terraces and river, before settling in for a quiet ride on a solar-powered boat gliding past those same hillsides. This experience is ideal for those who have already tasted the wine and want to connect with the Douro's other agricultural heritage.

What makes this unique?

Port wine isn't the only sweet thing that comes out of the Douro Valley, and this experience is proof of that. Most visitors leave the Douro having toured a wine estate. Few ever meet the people quietly keeping bees on those same slopes, working with knowledge passed down through generations. This is a rare opportunity to step into the shoes of one of the Douro's beekeepers, following their day-to-day work and sampling the fruit of the bees' labour along the way. For those who have already done the classic wine visit and want to see how deeply agricultural life still runs through this valley, this is the experience to choose. The solar boat ride at the end carries that same spirit of sustainability — a quiet, low-impact way to take in the river and its landscape without disturbing the wildlife, a world away from the diesel cruises most companies rely on.

What is the profile of the host?

Carlos de Oliveira and Paulo Baptista use their deep roots in the Douro to design experiences that go beyond the surface. With a thoughtful approach to storytelling and a strong network of local connections, they've crafted this day to offer not just context, but a real connection — to the land, its people, and its traditions. From hands-on encounters with beekeepers to quiet moments on the river, each stop has been chosen to give you a fuller understanding of what makes this region truly unique.

What to bring?

Light, comfortable clothing, a hat for sun protection, and sunscreen in the summer.
