What is this?
Arrábida Natural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2025, is less than an hour south of Lisbon, and this full-day scenic guided driving tour shows you the best of it. Your guide picks you up in Lisbon, and most of the day is spent driving along forest roads and clifftop viewpoints, so you see the park from every angle.
You start in Sesimbra, a fishing town below a castle that was once a Moorish stronghold. The road then climbs through oak and cork woods and past the vineyards that make Moscatel de Setúbal, the sweet fortified wine this coast is known for. Next is the Santa Margarida Cave, a sea cave with a small chapel at the back. Legend says sailors fleeing pirates hid here.
Then it’s down to the beaches: Portinho da Arrábida and Creiro, the hidden coves of Galapos, and a short walk down to Galapinhos, voted Europe’s best beach in 2017. On the way back to Lisbon, the road follows the Serra do Risco, cliffs that rise 380 meters straight out of the Atlantic.
What makes this unique?
Most visitors see Arrábida on a hike or at a beach. On this private tour, you take in the whole range, with most of the distance covered by car and only a couple o short walks, like the steps down to the Santa Margarida Cave and the path to Galapinhos beach.
Your guide is a local naturalist, so the landscape comes with its stories. Arrábida holds about 40% of all of Portugal’s flora. Below the cliffs, a 38-kilometer marine reserve protects more than 1,400 marine species. When UNESCO named it a Biosphere Reserve in 2025, it recognized the abundance of this nature but also how people still live with it: Sesimbra’s small-scale fishing, the olive groves, the Moscatel vineyards. UNESCO calls it “a living laboratory for sustainability.”
You’ll also hear about the people who shaped it: the Franciscan friars who, from 1542, lived in cells scattered across the slopes like a village of hermits, and the poet Sebastião da Gama, who called Arrábida his Serra-Mãe, the Mother Mountain.
