Lucia Bondetti

What is this?

The experience starts in Campo San Geremia in Cannaregio, the district that became home to Venice’s Jewish community in the 16th century. A first stop in Parco Savorgnan helps you picture the area before the Ghetto was established, when this part of the city stood at the edge of urban life. From there you enter the Ghetto itself, pausing at a contemporary gallery that keeps Jewish cultural presence active today, linking past scholarship with present creativity. You step inside a Sephardic synagogue to understand ritual life and the distinct traditions that coexisted within the Ghetto. A cicchetto stop recalls everyday sociability along the canals. Campo dei Mori and the walk along Fondamenta Ormesini trace the perimeter of the Ghetto and the waterways that once marked its night boundaries. Continuing onto the Fondamenta della Misericordia, one of the longest canal-side walkways in Venice, shows how closely the Ghetto was integrated into the neighborhood of Cannaregio.

What makes this unique?

Lucia is among the very few guides in Venice officially authorized to lead visits inside the city’s historic synagogues. This access allows the experience to unfold within the spaces where Jewish religious life has been practiced for centuries, offering insight that cannot be gained from the outside. Her perspective connects archival knowledge with on-site interpretation, helping you read architecture, institutions, and everyday spaces in context. The experience follows the Ghetto as a living urban environment, tracing its origins, transformations, and enduring identity within Cannaregio. With careful historical framing and close attention to place, it moves beyond an introductory walk to provide a deep cultural understanding of how this area developed and how its memory is preserved today. It brings continuity between past practices and present life, keeping the narrative precise and grounded.
