The Art of Illusion

This experience explores Venice as a city built on illusion, walking through the sestiere of Castello. You begin at Palazzo Grimani — a 16th century residence built by one of Venice's most powerful families. Lucia leads you through rooms where Renaissance frescoes, classical references and perspective games turn a noble house into a visual invention. You then walk to Fondazione Querini Stampalia, a 16th century palace whose ground floor was redesigned by Carlo Scarpa as a choreography of platforms, channels, and thresholds that lets the lagoon flow in and recede. Lucia guides you through his interventions, the framed views, and the small garden. After coffee, you enter the tenth-century Romanesque crypt beneath San Zaccaria, where the lagoon has risen over centuries to submerge the floor and create a mirror image; eight tombs of early doges lie beneath. The journey ends at a Venetian mask atelier, where illusion moves into papier-mâché, paint, and the making of Venetian characters.

Lucia Bondetti is a Venetian art historian with a postgraduate degree in Art History and Conservation of Cultural Heritage and a master's in Business Administration for Art. Her professional path has taken her to the Musée du Louvre in Paris and to Venice's own Gallerie dell'Accademia, before returning her to the city she grew up in.
