Woven in the Andes

This full-day journey takes you high into the Atacama landscape and deep into its culture. The journey begins in the high-altitude village of Socaire, where life has revolved around the rhythms of the Andes for centuries. Here, you’ll meet a local weaver who preserves one of the region’s rarest traditions, using cactus spines instead of needles — a meticulous technique passed from generation to generation that reflects the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Licanantay people. From Socaire, you'll ascend to the Chilean Altiplano for a stroll around the Miscanti and Miñiques Lagoons, nestled within Los Flamencos National Reserve. Framed by dormant volcanoes and sculpted by millions of years of tectonic activity, these sapphire lakes offer a striking contrast against the ochre desert. On the return to San Pedro de Atacama, you'll pause at the Tropic of Capricorn and see where a simple marker celebrates one of Earth’s great geographical lines.

This experience reveals how the Altiplano is more than a dramatic landscape: it’s a place where geology, culture, and spirituality are intertwined. Your guide will explain how the Andes were forged by powerful tectonic forces, creating volcanoes, high-altitude wetlands, and mineral-rich lakes that sustain surprising biodiversity in this seemingly inhospitable environment. You'll also learn about a meticulous weaving technique passed down generations that reflects the ingenuity of the Licanantay people. You’ll discover why these peaks are regarded as sacred protectors and how generations have adapted to life above 4,000 meters where water is scarce, temperatures fluctuate, and every harvest depends on a deep understanding of the land. Returning back to town, traces of the ancient Qhapaq Ñan (the vast Inca road network that once connected communities across the Andes) are a reminder that this remote plateau has long been a crossroads of trade, culture, and pilgrimage.
