Originally designed to house the large influx of Italians to the capital city of a newly founded Italy, the area grew to become a mecca for foodies thanks to its enormous food market amid traditional shops. 

We will begin the culinary adventure at a local café, and then explore the local market rich in history and authenticity and known for its over 200 stalls of local produce and delicacies; it’s a chance to engage with local vendors and artisans.  “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”

“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”

The Charming Soul of Lisbon

5 days in Lisbon with palaces, tiles, fado, markets and a day trip to the mountains and villages.

You can't spend holidays in Barcelona without also visiting the Sagrada Familia. It's probably the city's biggest attraction – and for a good reason. 

La Sagrada, a Roman Catholic church, dates back to the 19th century but is still under construction (some expect it to be finished by 2026, but in my view, 2030 is a safer bet). We opted for a walking tour to the monumental building with high pinnacles, numerous squiggles, and 3-dimensional interior design. Later, during the tour, we discovered the works of art by Sagrada’s architect Gaudi, including Casa Batllo and Casa Mila (La Pedrera). 

The Sagrada Familia is located a little northeast of the city center and is easily reached by metro, bus, or cab. We stayed about 5 hours in this part of the city – as we visited not only the church but also the surrounding area and had some fresh fish to eat in the nearby restaurants. You’ll also find many souvenirs – including miniature La Sagradas, a great gift to bring home!

Walking Tour: Sagrada Familia

The museum of photographs is fascinating in how it came about – two famous photographers, Patrick Menac’h and Hamid Mergani, brought together their common passion for vintage Moroccan photography, and pooled their photos for the public to admire. Here I realize how black-and-white photos can dramatize the light-and-shadow effects in the medina.

From the terrace, you can have a glass of mint tea, and wonder about the thousands of satellite dishes that dominate the view. 

It’s peaceful here. On a clear day, you can see the snow-clad High Atlas Mountains. But you can’t see the chaos of Djemaa el-Fna, or hear shouts of ‘Balek!’ whenever donkey-carts come through laden with heavy goods. You can’t see the ‘hand of Fatima’ good-luck symbols painted on the carts after they have ambled past you. Or count the number of chickens being transported on the back of a groaning Vespa.

A wide-angle lens will help capture the architectural details and the vibrant atmosphere. A polarizing filter can enhance the colors and reduce glare from the water. Try shooting at different angles to capture the varying moods and perspectives of this central landmark​. 

A Morning Photo Walk Ljubljana

Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia, located in the heart of Trieste, stands as a grand testimony to Europe's multifaceted history. Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, this largest seafront square in Europe is framed by grand palazzi, each narrating stories of varied rulers - from Romans to Austrians, and finally, Italians. Top reasons to visit:
1 - This central square in Trieste faces the Gulf of Trieste and is surrounded by remarkable buildings like the Government Building and the City Hall​​. The square is defined by its impressive Viennese-style architecture. The Palazzo del Governo, adorned with Murano glass mosaics, and the Palazzo del Municipio, with its striking clock tower, create a panorama of historical elegance. Stopping at viewpoints and small villages along the way makes for a more enjoyable and scenic trip.

Wander the city

If you want to explore Spain on foot, you should definitely set out on one of the pilgrimage routes through the country. All routes lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, which is located in the northwest. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Camino de Santiago has been named a central point of cultural exchange – and a historical highlight that shows what medieval Spain looked like. We chose to follow the famous Camino Frances. The original 800km route takes 5 weeks, but we decided to get in a little later, we only had 11 days, and opted for the route starting in the Galician town of Sarria. Along the way, you'll meet many other tourist pilgrims, but you'll also be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and taste Spain's best delicacies (tapas, seafood, and Spanish Serrano ham). Be prepared for a lot of walking – and take the best walking boots you have. We’ve enjoyed every minute, but some people we met had the wrong equipment, complaining about blisters.

Use the polarizing filter to manage reflections and the telephoto lens for detailed shots of the waterfalls and flora. Focus on textures and patterns in the landscape.

Sastavci Waterfall (12:15 PM - 12:45 PM). Gear: Tripod, wide-angle lens. Tips: Experiment with long exposure shots to achieve a silky water effect. Frame the waterfall with surrounding greenery to add depth to your photos. The tripod is essential for stabilizing the camera during long exposures.
