This private experience begins in a peaceful Kyoto temple where she explains the cultural significance of shodo, Japanese calligraphy, and how it has been used as both a form of art and meditation over the centuries. Rooted in Zen philosophy, shodo invites stillness, focus, and a deep connection between mind and body.

Next, Eri explains the tools used in Japanese calligraphy, and you'll learn to make your own ink from an inkstone. After introducing the different writing styles, she’ll guide you in practicing the foundational strokes used in each.

After a short tea break, you'll choose a favorite Japanese character or word — something meaningful to you — which you'll practice, refining your technique under Eri’s expert instruction. At the end of the workshop, you’ll produce a finished work on handmade paper, a keepsake to display and reflect on long after your return home.

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Where else do you get that?”

Sultanahmet Park

This is the view of The Red City, Marrakech’s medina from the panoramic terrace of Maison de la Photographie.

The museum of photographs is fascinating in how it came about – two famous photographers, Patrick Menac’h and Hamid Mergani, brought together their common passion for vintage Moroccan photography, and pooled their photos for the public to admire. Here I realize how black-and-white photos can dramatize the light-and-shadow effects in the medina.

From the terrace, you can have a glass of mint tea, and wonder about the thousands of satellite dishes that dominate the view. 

It’s peaceful here. On a clear day, you can see the snow-clad High Atlas Mountains. But you can’t see the chaos of Djemaa el-Fna, or hear shouts of ‘Balek!’ whenever donkey-carts come through laden with heavy goods. You can’t see the ‘hand of Fatima’ good-luck symbols painted on the carts after they have ambled past you. Or count the number of chickens being transported on the back of a groaning Vespa.

Pausing in the Frenzy

The Alhambra in Granada is a stunning example of Moorish architecture and one of Spain's most iconic historical sites. This vast complex, which includes the Nasrid Palaces, the Alcazaba fortress, and the Generalife gardens, served as the royal residence of the Nasrid sultans. Walking through its intricately decorated halls and serene gardens offers a glimpse into the splendor of the last Islamic kingdom in Spain.

Highlights of the Alhambra:

1. Nasrid Palaces: The heart of the Alhambra, the Nasrid Palaces are renowned for their intricate plasterwork, tile mosaics, and detailed wood carvings. The Hall of the Ambassadors and the Court of the Lions are must-see spaces, showcasing the pinnacle of Islamic art and architecture in Spain.
