Meet Pierre in the heart of Bordeaux in his studio next to Saint Michel church. Over coffee or tea paired with chocolatines and croissants, Pierre will share stories from his daily life and explain how his studio fits into this historic and lively area.

You’ll explore the origins of photography and learn about wet plate collodion—a 19th-century technique that uses glass or metal plates, chemical baths, and a large format camera. Pierre will demonstrate each step while coating, sensitizing, exposing, and developing images.

Watching your portrait come to life is a striking visual moment: deep contrasts, delicate textures, and a vintage feel that’s hard to find elsewhere. While your image slowly appears, Pierre shares family stories and his personal view of Bordeaux and photography. If the light conditions are good, you can choose to shoot outdoors and include a glimpse of the city in your portrait.

The uniqueness of this experience lies in the physicality of the process and the one-of-a-kind result. Wet plate collodion photography doesn’t aim to imitate the past—it uses an early technique to craft images that are singular, dense, and deeply present. Each portrait is shaped by light and chemistry, with a richness of tones and details that can’t be replicated.

Pierre Wetzel has spent years refining this 19th-century process, working entirely with a large-format camera and mastering the subtle balance of materials and timing. His approach transforms a technical procedure into a moment of artistic exchange, revealing the tension between chance and control that defines the collodion process.

Before and during the session, talking with Pierre, who greets you like friends, offers a window into local creative life and the expertise of an artist deeply rooted in the city and its oldest neighborhood.

Pierre Wetzel is a Bordeaux-based photographer known for his dedication to wet plate collodion, a 19th-century photographic process that he has mastered over years of experimentation. He lives and works in the Saint-Michel district, where he runs his studio and regularly collaborates on community-based art projects that connect photography with local stories and social engagement.

Spain

A special tour to see how Seville artisans use centuries-old techniques and lifelong expertise to produce exquisite pieces for religious events and rituals. 

Act 1: Bordado (Embroidery): Visit the workshop of a renowned artisan to witness the meticulous restoration of ceremonial vestments and regalia for processions of the Catholic fraternities in southern Spain, mainly centred around Semana Santa (Holy Week).

Act 2: Orfebrería (Silversmithing and Goldsmithing): You’ll meet a highly skilled orfebrero (silversmith) and learn about the various stages in creating elaborate embossed silver pieces such as candlesticks and decorative panels for pasos (floats) which carry the religious statues in the Semana Santa processions, all chiseled by hand.

Act 3: Imaginería (Wood Sculptures): Seville is famous for the quality of its extraordinarily lifelike statues. We'll visit a sculptor who creates religious imaginería in wood and clay, including for the tableaux of Christ’s Way of the Cross.

This off-the-beaten-track archaeological experience is designed for visitors to Mérida who want to explore lesser-known Maya heritage sites in the Yucatán, paired with a cenote visit.

You begin in the beautiful hills of the Puuc region at Oxkintok, an ancient Maya site known for its distinctive architecture, including a hieroglyphic stairway and underground tunnel system known as Tzat Tun Tzat, or “the Labyrinth,” which can sometimes be entered depending on conditions. Compared to better-known Puuc sites, Oxkintok remains quieter and less restored, allowing space to observe its layout and features without crowds.

From there, you continue to a cave, where ceramics and burials remain in situ. Zac explains how natural caves functioned within Maya culture — as ritual spaces, burial sites, and places closely connected to the natural and spiritual world.

The day concludes with lunch at a traditional restaurant, followed by time to swim at Cenote San Tito, before returning to Mérida.

Although Oxkintok lacks the single monumental pyramid found at larger Maya sites, its labyrinthine plazas, epic entrance arch, and underground structures are woven uniquely into the surrounding landscape. The place feels markedly different from more visited Puuc centers, offering the rare chance to spend time at a Maya city in  tranquility.

The visit continues at a group of cenotes located on land associated with a small, long-established Maya household. Access is private and requires prior coordination with the owners, something visitors aren’t able to arrange independently. This allows for a quieter, more respectful encounter with the landscape.

Zac’s experiences are shaped by the inclusion of both academic perspectives and local knowledge – “insider” and “outsider” voices. Alongside archaeological context, you hear how people who live in the region understand Maya heritage today — how these places are remembered, used, and talked about beyond textbooks and site signage.

The day continues with a meal centered on local Yucatec flavors, followed by time to swim in the crystal clear waters of a cenote. After a day of archaeological and cultural exploration, this stop offers a slower pace and a chance to rest in the natural landscape. You’ll have time to enjoy the setting, cool off in the water, and take in the surroundings before returning. 

Unlike cenotes in more heavily visited areas, the cenotes in this part of Yucatán are family-owned and privately managed. Access is quieter and more controlled, creating a calmer, more intimate experience than those found along standard tourist routes.

Ending the day here places the region’s natural environment alongside its cultural heritage, offering a refreshing, grounded close to the experience.

The ancient Maya site of Oxkintok was an important center before the cities of Uxmal and Chichén Itzá rose to fame. The site sits in a unique landscape at the start of the Puuc hill country, where the terrain begins to change from flat limestone plains to low hills.

As you explore the site, you see a monumental arch, a hieroglyphic staircase, and sculptural elements that reflect its early development. Surrounding Oxkintok are dozens of small caves, many of which were used by the ancient Maya for ritual purposes.

The site itself sits in a unique landscape--the start of the hill country--and the views are some of the best in the peninsula. As a less-visited Maya site, Oxkintok offers the rare chance to slow down and spend time with the place rather than moving quickly between highlights. The combination of its early architecture and the surrounding caves creates a setting where built structures and natural features are closely connected. This experience follows the full arc of ikebana, starting at Rokkaku-dō Temple, a historical site that the Ikenobō school locates as the origin of ikebana in Kyoto. Here, Ryoko introduces the cultural and spiritual foundations of Japanese flower arrangement as an ancient art. 

Next, at Hanamasa, a flower shop in Sanjo with a long history of supplying shrines and temples, you choose the seasonal stems that shape your creative process, selecting the materials you will later work with. From there, the experience continues to Ryoko’s private studio along the Kamo River. While you typically enjoy a scenic walk to the studio, she provides comfortable transportation in inclement weather or for guests with limited mobility. 

In a serene setting, you learn the fundamental principles of ikebana — balance, line, and negative space — and compose your own arrangement using the flowers you selected earlier. The session closes with light refreshments and time to sit with the work you have made.

The experience follows a beautiful sequence — story, material, practice. Encountering ikebana in Kyoto, where it grew out of the practice of offering flowers at Buddhist altars and later developed into a formal art, gives it special relevance. You come to understand that ikebana is not generic Japanese flower arrangement, but a discipline refined over centuries, particularly during the Muromachi period.

Instead of working with stems selected in advance, you choose the flowers and carry them to the studio. What you make is shaped by the path that led there. In Kyoto, ikebana is tied to seasonality and to a way of seeing the life of plants as they appear in nature, not simply their final appearance in a vessel.

Ryoko Arnwine is a floral designer and ikebana practitioner based in Kyoto. Her work is rooted in years of study in Mishō-ryū ikebana in Osaka, where she trained. She worked as a floral designer at The Ritz-Carlton Osaka and then brought that practice to New York, continuing her floral work and opening her a ikebana shop before returning to Kyoto, the city where the tradition first took shape.

Her teaching brings together long study in Japanese floral tradition and more than fifteen years of practice across Japan and New York. Shaped by a school that emphasizes close observation of nature, her approach is grounded and attentive to the cultural ideas that give ikebana its depth.

Ryoko’s cross-cultural background shapes how she teaches and designs today, blending the traditions and training she grew up with and the modern influences she has embraced along the way. This allows her to explain complex Japanese aesthetic ideas to international guests without simplifying or flattening them.

If you're looking for an unconventional neighborhood with art galleries, parks to hang out in, and lots of young, trendy people, Newtown is the place for you. I basically spend all my weekends there, drinking coffee, going to book clubs, working at the community kitchen Lentil as Anything, and having a beer at one of the lively bars at night. 

Australians love vintage – which makes Newtown the heaven for vintage clothes, cameras, vinyl records, and much more. I’ve got some new sandals, a polaroid camera, and jewelry, all unique pieces at an amazing price. Worth the hype!

You can easily get there by train, it's just a ride from Town Hall, or simply stay a few days in one of the hostels in Newtown.

Wire Pass, a gorge carved through the Cockscomb by Coyote Wash, is the most popular entry route into Buckskin Gulch. It takes 1.7 miles to get to the slot canyon from the trailhead. Wire Pass is short, less than half a mile, but its slot canyon is even more confined than Buckskin, and makes for spectacular photos.

Buckskin Gulch twists its way for another 13 surreal miles, but we turn back after a couple of miles to head back to the trailhead. We’ve stopped every few feet to capture various angles of the rock and light - and literally run out of time. You could certainly do a wonderful all-day hike here.

Through the Wire

2 - Walk Through History: The castle grounds host the Tergestino Lapidarium, with inscriptions, sculptures, and fragments of Roman architecture. The panoramic terrace and the vast Cortile delle Milizie (Militia Courtyard) offer breathtaking views of the city and the Gulf of Trieste.
3 - Museum of Armoury: A significant attraction within the castle is the Museum of the Castle of San Giusto Armoury. It displays a wide range of European weaponry from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, along with chests from the same periods and Venetian traditional furniture.
The castle is easily accessible from the Trieste Centrale railway station, with the closest bus stop on Via Giuseppe Rota.
