Fernwayer's Things to Do in Bragança

Venture through the northeast of Portugal, exploring the medieval city of Bragança and the surrounding Montesinho Natural Park, where stone-built villages nestle among chestnut groves and forests shelter deer, birds of prey, and the elusive Iberian wolf.

Beyond the mountains of Marão and Alvão in the northeast of Portugal lies the region of Trás-os-Montes. It’s here you’ll find the historic city of Bragança with its medieval citadel perched high on a hill and the Romanesque Domus Municipalis. The city is the perfect getaway to explore the surrounding Montesinho Natural Park, a vast landscape of traditional stone villages, chestnut groves and rolling hills where wildlife still thrives.

A naturalist photographer takes you through this ancient land he calls home, showcasing its biodiversity, architectural heritage and natural granite borders, travelling in a 4x4 before getting your boots on the ground for a close-up look at the animals that roam here. From the wild boar to the red deer, and if you’re lucky, a rare glimpse of the Iberian Wolf. Meanwhile, a cultural entrepreneur immerses you in the region’s traditional folk roots, introducing you to the artisans crafting the wooden masks that feature in annual festivals and the stick dancers performing on village streets.
