Andrea is an anthropologist, Master Mezcalier, and singer with over 15 years of experience promoting the mezcal culture of Guerrero through her projects. Her connection to mezcal runs deep, shaped by family traditions where the spirit was always paired with music and food. Since 2010, she has played an active role in elevating Guerrero mezcal on both national and international stages.

Juan Pablo is a traditional music promoter, singer, and composer for film, theatre, and collaborative projects. He is also a dedicated advocate for preserving Cardenche music in Mexico and abroad, helping to keep this rare vocal tradition alive through performance and education.

You’ll begin in Oia before the crowds arrive, following the old sailors' trail where they used to build boats and move them rooftop to rooftop; now, they plant vibrant bougainvilleas. Marie Fernández is a Mexican photographer who grew up in Mexico City. From 2017 to 2019, she studied photography in Paris and graduated as a photojournalist and documentary photographer. She is currently a member of the Women Photographers History collective.

Manuel is also a Mexican photographer from the city. He has worked with international media such as The New York Times and is currently contributing to The New Yorker. In 2024, he held his first solo exhibition, hosted by the U.S. Congress at the Capitol Building and funded by Amnesty International and the Open Society Foundations.

In this experience, they combine their photography skills with their passion for welcoming people to their home city and helping visitors experience the best it has to offer. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

1 - The Roman Amphitheater, carved out of rock, once seated thousands of spectators, eagerly gathered for gladiatorial combats and public spectacles. Its elliptical structure, with the remnants of tiered seating and central arena, evokes the powerful aura of ancient Roman entertainment and social life. The structure, hidden over the centuries by surrounding buildings, was rediscovered in 1814 and fully unearthed in 1938 during a demolition. 
2 - This archaeological marvel provides invaluable insights into Roman architectural genius. You can see the sophisticated design and engineering techniques used in its construction, including the intricate system of underground passages where gladiators and animals were held before contests, showcasing Roman innovation and craftsmanship.
3 - Notable for its architecture that utilizes the natural slope of the hill, the amphitheater could accommodate between 3,500 to 6,000 spectators and was built primarily of masonry, with a wooden stage. Today, the amphitheater serves as a vibrant cultural venue. It hosts various cultural events, including open-air concerts, theatrical performances, and historical reenactments, bridging the past and present and bringing ancient Rome's spirit to life for contemporary audiences.
4 - Walking through the amphitheater, you truly embark on a journey back in time. Each stone and corridor tells a story of the past, from the roar of the crowd to the bravery of gladiators, offering a tangible connection to the rich history and traditions of Roman society.

San Pedro de Atacama is an oasis within the driest desert in the world at the very north of Chile. At more than 8000 feet above sea level, it sits in the center of a ring of volcanoes, the most famous of them being Licancabur. A couple of them still spew smoke.

Volcano climbing, consequently, is a very popular activity here ('why climb the volcanoes?’ - I ask. ‘Because you can!’- says the guide) and we are quickly put on a 4-day program to acclimatize ourselves to the altitude - with progressively higher altitude hikes to prepare us for the final climb. My favorite part of the hikes is the opportunity to capture the colors of the altiplano! That and the thrill of walking through the Mars like topography of the Atacama desert.

The spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal overrun by miles of  unspoiled jungle are extraordinarily rich in wildlife incl. the elusive jaguar. 🐆 

It’s one of the few UNESCO World Heritage sites that combines both cultural and natural richness and the 500+ sq km contains numerous remains of the Mayan civilization scattered across wetlands, savannah and tropical jungles teaming with birds and monkeys.

It was a thrilling experience to wander in a place that was one of the great cities of the world around 700 AD and wonder how people lived at that time. 

We went late afternoon to take advantage of the magical light falling on the structures and our guide, Daveed, was very helpful in highlighting the important sites and the life at that time. We enjoyed watching the sunset from the top of Temple IV. A perfect filming location for Yavin 4 in Star Wars.

After the sunset, we walked in the fading light to the spectacular Grand Plaza, relieved in Daveed’s assurance that the 🐆 is shy of humans.

Walking with the Zu/’hoasi Bushmen of the Makgadikgadi Plains in the Central Kalahari, quintessential hunter-gatherers, I learned several things that I hope never to have to use - how to pronounce first names that are laden with clicks, collect plants for medicinal recipes, dig for scorpions, and make a fire with twigs and leaves.

Makgadikgadi means 'dry, dry', but the bush men and women know how to live in harmony with the land. Family and cultural ties are strong.

Thanks to Jack’s Camp for organizing this visit, they have longstanding connections with the local people.

Walking with Zu/’hoasi

Orgosolo, a picturesque village in the heart of Sardinia’s Barbagia region, is renowned for its unique blend of history, culture, and artistry. Built in 1325 by Sultan Uthman II, this madrasa is renowned for its intricate Islamic art and serene atmosphere, offering a profound glimpse into Morocco's scholarly past. I am in Kaokoland. Final frontier of Namibia. Home to the beautiful Himba people.

The last nomadic, herding tribe in southern Africa, they still maintain their dress and traditions. Red ochre paste for sun protection. Smoke from herbs for cleansing and perfume. Intricate hairstyles. Lots of leather jewelry. A beauty routine that takes three hours every single day to complete.

This young woman graciously agrees to be my ‘model’ - and is as curious about me and my traditions as I am about hers.

Land of Himba

Visiting the salt pans in Olhão during summer offers a unique and scenic experience, revealing a centuries-old tradition that continues to shape the Algarve’s landscape and economy. Located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, these shimmering salt flats provide a fascinating look into the artisanal process of salt production and offer an ideal setting for observing wildlife. 

1. The salt pans are particularly striking in summer when the intense sun aids the natural evaporation process, leaving behind gleaming white salt crystals. Walking along the paths, you’ll see salt workers skillfully raking and collecting salt, a practice that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

2. These salt flats are a sanctuary for birdlife, with flamingos, storks, and avocets frequently spotted wading through the shallow pools. Summer brings an abundance of bird species to the area, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and photographers.

Summer Visit: Olhão Salt Pans

Valencia, Spain, is home to the Museo Faller de Valencia, a fascinating museum dedicated to the city’s most famous festival, Las Fallas. This annual event, held every March, is known for its massive, intricate papier-mâché sculptures (ninots), fireworks, and street celebrations. While most of these sculptures are burned at the festival’s conclusion, the museum houses a unique collection of ninots that have been "pardoned" by popular vote, preserving a piece of this spectacular tradition for visitors to admire year-round.

1. A collection of ninots spanning decades showcases the evolution of the festival’s satirical and artistic creations, often depicting famous politicians, celebrities, or humorous everyday scenes.

Ethiopia

In Lalibela, I am moved by the devotion and faith of pilgrims who have walked for weeks, and hundreds of miles across the country, to celebrate Genna - Ethiopia’s Christmas - on January 7. Here, the year is 2011, since Ethiopia still observes a pre-Julian calendar. I am immediately taken in by the idea of being 7 years younger, albeit for a fleeting moment.

Pilgrims arrive early - between midnight to 5 am -  to get a prized standing spot inside the tiny but iconic Biete Gyorgis. As I watch pilgrims read from their bibles, often from inside their shroud, using a candle or torch, I realize I’ve never seen such fervor in worship.

By 6:30 am, Biete Giyorgis, the iconic rock-hewn church of Lalibela, has no more standing space, so these pilgrims huddle outside and around trees and pray from their copies of the Bible, guided by the chanting from the church, that fills the air with spirituality. It’s poetic and beautiful.
