Semana Santa transforms Seville for a week each spring (29 March to 5 April in 2026). From Palm Sunday through early morning of Easter Sunday, more than 60 religious brotherhoods cross the city in processions.

You watch the processions from street level as they cross different parts of the city. Each brotherhood leaves its church and walks toward the cathedral in a ritual journey that defines the tradition. You see the nazarenos in robes and pointed hoods. The pasos carry centuries-old sculptures of Christ or the Virgin surrounded by candles and flowers. Beneath the platforms, hidden costaleros move in synchronized steps so the pasos appear to glide through the streets.

An expert local guide leads you to vantage points along the route and explains what you are seeing. You encounter one or two — sometimes even three — processions in some of Seville’s most emblematic streets and squares. You hear the history of the brotherhoods, meaning of the rituals, and stories that surround them.

Semana Santa processions can last between four and fourteen hours and draw enormous crowds. Without guidance, visitors often wait in one place without understanding what they are seeing or how the procession works.

Your guide belongs to a local brotherhood and knows the rhythm of Holy Week from the inside. He explains the structure of the hermandad, the meaning of the rituals, and the role of the costaleros carrying the multi-ton pasos. He also knows how the city moves during the processions. Begin with three days in Barcelona, where Manila recommends focusing not on checklists but on rhythm: explore historic neighborhoods, check out design ateliers, sample Catalan cuisine, and seek out the quieter corners still alive with local tradition. | Head south into the wine country of Priorat, a lesser-known region with rolling hills and medieval villages. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. "If I know a song of Africa, of the giraffe and the African new moon lying on her back, does Africa know a song of me?", mused Karen Blixen in Out of Africa. I am too much of a nomad but if I ever owned a farm, as Ms. Blixen did, it would be in the Lamai Wedge - located in the triangular watershed between the Kenya border and the Mara river. Possibly the most beautiful place in East Africa. Besides being a refuge for the Great Migration after crossing the River Mara, it has great game year-round.

Until recently, no camps were allowed here, but now you can stay at the Singita Mara River Tented Camp and a few others. 

And wake up at dawn to catch the sun filtering through the clouds and mist. The Wildebeest seem a little dazed as they contemplate the scenery over the hills of Kenya while eating succulent grasses - and staying out of the way of the cheetah brothers out on a prowl, with whom we tagged along for an unsuccessful hunt. Life is tough.

Jamaica

A Black River Safari took us into the heart of the largest freshwater wetland ecosystem in Jamaica, the Great Morass at the Black River. This area, spanning 125 square miles, is a haven for biodiversity, featuring giant mangrove trees and an array of swamp animals, including the endangered American crocodile, protected under the Wildlife Protection Act in Jamaica. 

The guides spotted crocodiles of various sizes in the water and along the riverbanks, including baby crocodiles. Also several bird species call this area home. As we glided along the river, we saw snowy egrets, great egrets, and great blue herons, among other bird species.

The River teems with mangrove trees, ferns, and water lilies. The mangroves are particularly noteworthy, with some species having roots extending 40 feet downward. A curious aspect of the Black River is its dark color, which becomes more noticeable as you move upstream. This is due to the peat soil at the bottom of the river, which, despite giving the river its dark appearance, keeps the water clear. 

If you're interested in learning more about the crocodiles, many tours conclude with a visit to the Crocodile Nursery, where young and injured crocodiles are cared for until they are ready to return to the wild.

Since I knew that I was gonna travel to Argentina I wanted to visit La Boca. It is a little neighborhood where you can find some of the most famous landscapes of Buenos Aires. 

At the time I arrive, via bus or “bondi”, as it is said there, it was full of people; eating, buying souvenirs, taking photos, etc.

I loved this experience so much that I don’t want to spoil anything to you, just take the chance and visit that amazing place!

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

This was my first time visiting Gigantes Islands, and I was struck by the raw beauty of its cliffs and crystal-clear waters that surround its secluded beaches. There are several islands that you can hop in to and my favorite one is what the locals call the “mini boracay” because the sand sure feels like that in Boracay. Other islands are as equally awesome like the Bantigue sandbar, and Cabugay. We also explored the local neighborhood and sure has its own interesting stories. For one, I discovered that due to the abundance of scallops in the island, there’s a neighborhood that stands on a land area that’s made up of scallop shells that is meters thick! Just imagine how much scallops shells that would’ve taken. There’s a lot to explore but if you just want something that’s relaxed, you can just have a good beer by the beach from sunset til night. 

Gigantes Islands

Mafra Palace has also gained literary fame through Nobel Laureate José Saramago’s novel, Baltasar and Blimunda, which immortalizes the palace’s history and symbolism in Portuguese culture.

2. The Mafra Library is often regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. Housing over 36,000 volumes, including rare books and ancient manuscripts, it is notable for its Rococo interior and the colony of bats kept to protect the books from insects.

3. The palace basilica is a marvel of Baroque architecture, with twin bell towers, each housing a carillon of 92 bells, one of the largest of its kind. Inside, the basilica’s Italian marble and ornate altar are breathtaking, and its six historic organs are still used for concerts today.

4. In the palace gardens, visitors can stroll through manicured hedges, fountains, and shaded pathways, providing a peaceful escape amid the lush greenery, much as it was used by the royal family centuries ago.

Tip: Arrive early to avoid crowds, and take a moment to enjoy the views of the palace from the courtyard. Also, photography enthusiasts should bring a wide-angle lens to capture the full scope of this architectural marvel!

Dario Moreno Street is a charming, cobblestone avenue known for its colorful facades and artistic atmosphere. It leads to the historic Asansör (Elevator), a 1907-built structure designed to connect the lower and upper parts of İzmir with ease. The top of the elevator offers spectacular views of the city and the sea, making it a must-visit spot for photographers and history lovers alike.
1. This quaint street boasts cobblestone paths and colorful facades that exude old-world charm.
2. It is named after the famous Turkish-Jewish singer and artist, Dario Moreno, adding cultural significance to the area.
3. The historic Asansör, built in 1907, is an iconic elevator that connects two levels of the city.
