This private, 4-hour ceramics experience invites you to create a decorative piece while enjoying a few glasses of wine and empanadas. You will learn about the artisan process of ceramics, from modeling to decoration, culminating in a unique piece to take home as a reminder of your time in Mendoza. Florencia Campos Correa, or Flor, is a Chilean-Spanish textile designer and author based in Santiago. Her business, Ullvuna, is dedicated to portable pin loom weaving kits which are available globally. Much of Flor's inspiration comes from her passion and appreciation for Chilean culture and people. She deeply admires the landscapes and nature as well as the ancient fables she absorbed as a child while traveling every corner of Chile by caravan with her family.

Flor has authored several books packed with vibrant pattern inspiration and projects. Her nature motifs are translated into floral crochet designs published in a British magazine and she has penned a children's story which inspires creativity and entrepreneurship in the youngest of budding designers.

 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”

Lucía remembers it too; her grandmother was a seamstress who hand-stitched elaborate costumes each year. 

The essence of Andalusia, María José says, is best experienced not through spectacles, but through shared moments. Conversations in taverns. Crafts passed down through generations. The Roman Amphitheater in Via del Teatro Romano, Trieste, boasts a rich history dating back to the end of the 1st century BC. This impressive structure, dating back to the 1st century AD, offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the grandeur and spectacle of Roman civilization. Key highlights:
1 - The Roman Amphitheater, carved out of rock, once seated thousands of spectators, eagerly gathered for gladiatorial combats and public spectacles. Its elliptical structure, with the remnants of tiered seating and central arena, evokes the powerful aura of ancient Roman entertainment and social life. The structure, hidden over the centuries by surrounding buildings, was rediscovered in 1814 and fully unearthed in 1938 during a demolition. 
2 - This archaeological marvel provides invaluable insights into Roman architectural genius. You can see the sophisticated design and engineering techniques used in its construction, including the intricate system of underground passages where gladiators and animals were held before contests, showcasing Roman innovation and craftsmanship.
3 - Notable for its architecture that utilizes the natural slope of the hill, the amphitheater could accommodate between 3,500 to 6,000 spectators and was built primarily of masonry, with a wooden stage. Today, the amphitheater serves as a vibrant cultural venue. It hosts various cultural events, including open-air concerts, theatrical performances, and historical reenactments, bridging the past and present and bringing ancient Rome's spirit to life for contemporary audiences.

Australia

The best thing about visiting Australia is that scenic views and spectacular nature are just a stone's throw away, no matter where you are. If you're in Sydney, you won't get a better view of the ocean than walking through Royal National Park and taking Bundeena Drive to Marley Walk.

Passing through scenic heathland with small trees, you'll soon come to a bushwalk through a denser forest. We saw many native bird species, including the famous cockatoo, had a dip in one of the pools along the way, and took stunning sunset photos as you look out over the wild ocean. The tourist highlight is Wedding Cake Rock, but our personal star was Marley Beach, a dreamy, hidden sandy beach where you can relax and dip your feet in the refreshing water.

You can rent a car and drive directly to Bundeena, but we decided to take the train from Sydney to Cronulla and from there take the ferry to Bundeena.

The Twelve Apostles is located on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. It’s a stunning coastal drive that is accessible with any type of vehicle.

Tucked away in the High Atlas Mountains, Imlil is a picturesque Berber village and the starting point for some of Morocco’s best mountain hikes, including the trek to Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. Surrounded by dramatic valleys, walnut groves, and traditional mudbrick houses, Imlil offers a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and Berber culture. Whether you're here for a short hike or an extended trek, this charming village is an unforgettable destination for outdoor lovers.

1. A scenic hike through the Aït Mizane Valley takes you past terraced fields, flowing streams, and small Berber villages, offering breathtaking views at every turn.

2. A traditional Berber market in Asni, held every Saturday, brings villagers together to trade fresh produce, spices, and handmade crafts, providing a glimpse into authentic mountain life.

3. A moderate hike to the Aroumd village rewards visitors with stunning panoramic views of the valley and a chance to experience traditional Berber hospitality over a warm glass of mint tea.

4. A challenging trek to Mount Toubkal’s base camp takes two days and passes through rocky landscapes, mountain streams, and breathtaking alpine scenery, making it a bucket-list adventure for hikers.

5. A waterfall near Imlil, just a short walk from the village, is a peaceful spot to relax, surrounded by the sounds of nature and views of the rugged mountain terrain.

Tips for Visiting
The best time to visit is spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) for mild weather and clear hiking conditions. Wearing sturdy hiking boots is essential, as the terrain can be rocky and steep. Hiring a local guide enhances the experience, especially for longer treks. Staying in a Berber guesthouse offers an authentic cultural experience, and packing warm layers is important, as temperatures drop at higher altitudes.

In Marrakech, explore the labyrinth of the medina, lined with market stalls and craftspeople, and full of secret places and contradictions. 

Anonymous, windowless, fortress-like walls enclose luxurious riads built around tiled courtyards, complete with fountains and gardens.

Happily, my wonderful guide Khadija of Morocco Private Experience, encourages my curiosity. She leads the way across the medieval labyrinth of chaotic alleyways - to the souks where centuries-old skills continue to flourish. 

I am intrigued about how all the craftspeople are clustered together by trade. We watch a metal craftsman shape a pair of gnawa cymbals. A leatherworker allows me inside his workshop for a better view. There is an entire street of ornate lantern sellers - the bronze-latticed lanterns competing with the palm-leafed roofs of the souks in throwing light-and-shadow patterns all around.

Karagöl Nature Park, nestled in the mountains near İzmir, offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers. The park’s centerpiece is a serene mountain lake surrounded by lush forests, making it a favorite for picnics, hiking, and birdwatching. It’s a perfect destination for those seeking tranquility in nature.

Karagöl Nature Park

A slow-paced night photo walk. On foot over odd shaped cobblestones. 

It does not start well as it starts raining even as we take a cab to Pantheon to meet our local photographer and lose a wallet in the cab. We miraculously get It back (another story) and we start our walk .. lethargic, in deference to summer, but still aware of art and life.

We walk from the Pantheon through Piazza Navona to Ponte Vittorio Emmanuel for views over to the Vatican.  The streets are wet, and Piazza Navona is teeming with Romans doing la passeggiata, an evening ritual I wish we could reapply in other cities. 

Later, joining the locals in their celebration of Summer along River Tiber (Lungo il Tivera Roma) well into midnight, it is easy to forget all about work and settle more definitively into a vacation frame-of-mind. 

Afterwards, a stroll to Campidoglio for priceless views of the illuminated Roman Forum, seems like just the thing to do.

To Rome, With Love

Step back in time at the Museum of Romanticism in Madrid, a museum dedicated to the artistic, literary, and cultural aspects of the Romantic period. Located in a late 18th-century building in the Calle de San Mateo, the museum offers a glimpse into the customs, manners, and daily life of 19th-century Madrid. Inaugurated in 1924 as Museo Romántico, it was rebranded as Museo Nacional del Romanticismo in 2009, reflecting its status as a national treasure. Top 5 highlights:
1. The museum, housed in a building dating from the late 18th-century, was originally linked to the patronage of the Marquis of Vega-Inclán. Its architecture alone, consisting of two stories plus an attic floor, provides a historic backdrop to the exhibits.
2. Explore an extensive collection of 19th-century paintings, featuring works by prominent artists such as Francisco de Goya, Leonardo Alenza, and Valeriano Domínguez Bécquer. The collection also includes romantic-era furniture, pianos, porcelain, and other objects reflective of the time.
3. The museum's exhibits are arranged in the context of a historic house with various rooms like a dining room and a billiard room. These thematic rooms offer insights into the everyday life of Madrid's gentry during the Romantic period.

5. The museum and its collection were declared a historical-artistic monument in 1962, emphasizing its cultural and historical significance.

Jamaica

1942: Errol Flynn popularised rafting down the river Rio Grande in Jamaica on bamboo rafts, made of long logs bound together. Fast forward: I'm on a raft for a 3-hour ride and sensory overload: ferns, birds, rapids, butterflies, serenading raft captain. But here’s my favorite part —

After an hour on the river, we dock at Belinda’s Riverside Restaurant, a rustic gem nestled by the Rio Grande. How does this place even exist in the middle of nowhere? Turns out Belinda and team hike a couple of hours across the hills, ingredients in tow, to set up shop each time, serving up Jamaican-style curry goat and fish (take your pick: fried, steamed, or escoveitched). Prepared with love and served alongside rice or bammy. One of my best meals in Jamaica. Call ahead to make sure Belinda’s is open on the day you visit.

The Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts in located inside the ancient Fes Medina and is renowned for its comprehensive display of woodcraft but also for its unique architectural features that make a visit here a memorable experience. Why visit?
1. One of the standout attractions within the museum is the elegant fountain located in the courtyard. Beautifully adorned with intricate wood and tile work, it exemplifies the fine craftsmanship typical of Moroccan artistry and offers a tranquil centerpiece to the museum’s architecture. 
2. The museum's structure itself, an 18th-century fondouk that was once a bustling center for merchants, and has been meticulously restored to showcase the original wooden carvings and tile work. 
3. Each floor of the museum offers a different perspective on the evolution of woodcraft in Morocco, from domestic and architectural to liturgical pieces, providing a comprehensive view of this traditional art form.
4. Amid the chaos of the Medina, the museum offers a peaceful retreat. The rooftop café provides a space to relax and soak in the views of the city.
The museum is accessible with an entrance fee - it’s definitely a place of insight and inspiration, and can be viewed in an hour’s time.
