This is an early-morning walk through the Barrocal hills outside Benafim, an inland village in the Loulé municipality. Your guide is Joana, a local naturalist whose parents are biologists and whose own knowledge of these hills runs deep. The 5 km hike begins at 7:30 with coffee and snack — to beat the Algarve heat in summer.

You set out into Nave do Cordeiros, a small valley of dryland orchards where carob, almond and fig trees grow as they have for centuries. Along the way, Joana takes you past a Forno de Cal — an old limestone kiln that once produced whitewash for every Algarve village — and an Eira, a circular stone threshing floor where families dried their grain and figs in the open sun.

You harvest with the farmer who works these fields: carob pods in late summer, almonds in early autumn, olives in late autumn. Back in Benafim, the morning closes with a tasting of carob products — flour, biscuits, syrup — that Algarve kitchens have made from this tree for a thousand years.

The carob, almond, and fig are known in the Algarve as the três delícias — the three delights. They arrived with the Moors over a thousand years ago, took to the limestone soils of the Barrocal, and shaped how this region eats. Most travelers leave the Algarve having tasted them in a tarte mista — the regional fig-almond-carob tart. This walk reverses that order: you start in the orchards where the trees grow, harvest the fruit yourself, and end at a table where carob is the end of a long chain of work.

What you pass through on the way is important. The Forno de Cal explains why every village here is white. The Eira explains how communities once worked the land together — drying grain, sharing labor, keeping a season's harvest from spoiling. Joana points these out as someone who grew up here: these are the working bones of a landscape that fed the people who lived in it.

The walk is invigorating (there's a short demanding climb), the morning unhurried, and the food is well earned.

During the Second World War, Bordeaux lived four years under German occupation, a period that left a lasting mark on the city. This experience explores why the port and the Garonne made Bordeaux a strategic target and how the occupation unfolded, from the Armistice to the departure of German troops.

The route follows the local harbor and its surrounding streets, where specific sites and events reveal how everyday life continued under constraint. With a focus on the modern intellectual history of Paris and the narratives that shape how the Revolution is remembered, this experience challenges common understandings of the “French Revolution” in a nation that has experienced multiple revolutions since 1789.

Samuél's approach invites participants to consider how the storming of the Bastille and the Declaration of the Rights of Man also led to the Terror and Napoleon Bonaparte’s colonial regime, and how three 19th-century revolutions helped inspire Situationism and May 1968.

Samuél has lived in Paris since 2010 as a novelist, musician, and literary tour guide. He holds an MA in social theory and an MFA in creative writing. He is a member of an indie rock band and the co-founder of an independent anglophone publisher in Paris.

He taught creative writing at the Sorbonne for five years before focusing on writing and leading historical walks on modernism, existentialism, and the Nazi Occupation of Paris. His first novel, Slim and the Beast, shares its name with his band, which has played extensively across Europe. His second novel, The Requisitions, is a work of historical metafiction set in Nazi-occupied Poland.

Samuél is also fiction editor at SOUVENIR Magazine, an anglophone arts and literature magazine based in Paris.

Playing out on the pedestrianized street of Caminito, you will meet two professional and award winning tango dancers before capturing incredible images of them performing to the backdrop of the colorful, mismatched tenement houses La Boca is famed for. Sporting full costume and make-up, the dancers are happy to answer any questions you have about this art form. 

The experience starts over a cup of coffee in a cafe where Bernardo will discuss the best camera settings for capturing tango on the street. He will address compositional tips, focusing techniques, and working with moving subjects. This is an opportunity to ask any questions and get to grips with the functionality of your camera or device (smartphones are welcome). As the activity progresses, he will continue to impart knowledge and mentor you throughout.

Hosted by a professional Porteño photographer whose work appears in publications all over the world, you will partake in a private photography session with two tango dancers in La Boca. This dancing duo will be dressed in full costume and make-up and you will have the opportunity to chat before and during the experience—providing a rare access moment to learn about this art form from those who practice it and take a closer look at the fashion.The setting itself couldn't be more appropriate. After all, La Boca is one of the barrios of Buenos Aires where tango found its feet in the 19th century. 

Bernardo will art direct the shoot, indicating where and how the dancers should pose while at the same time assisting you with your camera settings and composition. All you need to worry about is taking compelling photos and feeling the rhythm!

In Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the day begins just outside the village at the Monastère Saint-Paul de Mausole, a former monastery that housed the psychiatric institution where Van Gogh stayed from 1889 to 1890. Here, the fields, olive groves, and cypress trees are not distant scenery but the same subjects he painted again and again, within walking distance of his room. The visit stays grounded in this close relationship between the artist and the landscape that shaped his work.

After lunch, you continue to Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that opens onto a very different setting. The route follows the city through its main landmarks, from the Amphitheatre and the Théâtre Antique to Place du Forum, Saint-Trophime Cathedral, Hôtel de Ville, and the Hôtel Dieu garden, passing through streets and squares along the way. Roman remains, later buildings, and places linked to Van Gogh are all part of this urban fabric, seen through a continuous narrative rather than as isolated monuments.

The experience brings together two places that marked consecutive chapters in Van Gogh’s life in Provence. In Arles, you encounter the city where he arrived in 1888, drawn by its light, its streets, the intensity of urban life, and where he produced some of his most important work. My sister and I flew into Las Vegas to then see the Grand Canyon. We woke early to get picked up at our hotel and the tour took us to the Hoover Dam, a stop on Route 66 (where the Cars movie took place), and finally the Grand Canyon. We did an easy hike but it took about 4 hours. We stopped multiple times for pictures. It was amazing. The pictures don’t do it justice. 

My sister and I wish we had spent more time there and maybe hiking a different trail.

Parmigiano-Reggiano Tasting

The ancient city of Pompeii is one of the most fascinating and well-preserved archaeological sites in the world. Buried under volcanic ash after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, Pompeii offers an unparalleled glimpse into daily life in a Roman city nearly 2,000 years ago. The volcanic ash remarkably preserved buildings, frescoes, mosaics, and even the casts of residents, allowing visitors to walk through the streets and experience the grandeur and tragedy of this once-thriving city.
 Highlights of Pompeii:
1. Visit the Forum, which was the social, political, and economic center of Pompeii, where people gathered for public speeches, markets, and religious activities. Surrounded by temples and public buildings, it offers incredible views of Mount Vesuvius in the distance.

4. Visit the House of the Faun, which was a grand residence featuring stunning mosaics, including the famous Alexander Mosaic, which depicts Alexander the Great’s battle with Persian King Darius. The house offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Pompeii's elite.

5. The Lupanar, the ancient brothel, notable for its well-preserved erotic frescoes, offering a more intimate look at Pompeii’s social life and customs.

This museum is part of the global Museum of Illusions chain, celebrated for its mind-bending and interactive exhibits. Top highlights:
1. The museum houses an array of artworks, interactive displays, and holograms that challenge your perception of reality. Featuring works by artists specializing in optical illusions, including Salvador Dali and M.C. Escher, it's a place that bewilders and amuses in equal measure.
2. Among its many attractions, the museum features the Ames Room, where people appear to grow or shrink, the Rotated Room that challenges your sense of balance, and the Infinity Room that creates an endless mirror effect, reminiscent of Yayoi Kusama's works.
3. Prepare to defy the laws of physics in the Anti-Gravity Room and navigate the disorienting Vortex Tunnel. These exhibits play with the perception of gravity and balance, offering a thrilling experience.

This is one of the several small but perfectly crafted museums in Madrid - we recommend visiting a couple of them while you are in the city. The town Is made for walking with stone arches In bold colors, baroque architecture, churches from Spain and vibrant markets bursting with colorful woven garments like ponchos, hats & table cloth and handicrafts.

It’s the birthplace of chocolate 🍫 and there are several museums that teach how the Mayans made ‘the food of the gods’. Adjoining chocolate cafes serve decadent treats and chocolate liqueur.

The coffee ☕️ is divine too and apart from sampling the local shops, we visited a local plantation to learn about coffee making.

Antigua is one of our favorite Central American cities.

Colorful Markets

Granada, Spain, is home to the Monasterio de San Jerónimo, a stunning Renaissance monastery known for its exquisite cloisters, intricate altarpiece, and historical significance. Founded in the 16th century by the Catholic Monarchs, this monastery blends Gothic and Renaissance styles, making it one of the most architecturally impressive religious sites in Andalusia. It also holds a deep connection to Spanish history, as it was the final resting place of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the renowned general known as "El Gran Capitán."

1. The main cloister, surrounded by elegant archways and lush gardens, provides a peaceful retreat and showcases the harmony of Renaissance architecture.

2. Inside the church, an opulent altarpiece adorned with gold leaf and intricate carvings stands as one of the most spectacular in Spain, celebrating the military victories of El Gran Capitán.

Monasterio de San Jerónimo

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.
