This is a 4.5-hour walking tour that showcases Milan's enduring artistic heritage. The tour begins with a visit to the stunningly preserved and often overlooked Ca' Granda, originally a major hospital and now home to Milan’s University. Commissioned by Duke Francesco Sforza in 1456 and designed by architect Filarete, its avant-garde design became a model for European hospitals. Despite wartime damages, its fifteenth-century courtyards and rebuilt eighteenth-century facade remain breathtaking. The tour includes the library and the icehouse. You begin at one of San Miguel’s most iconic art spaces — a former textile factory built in 1902 and now transformed into a vibrant complex of galleries and artist studios. You leave San Sebastián by private transport and drive west toward the coast, where the Basque Country’s food culture begins in daily routines. In Zarautz, you walk through the local market as residents shop for fish landed that morning, seasonal vegetables, and cured meats that anchor home cooking. Your host explains how people here buy food day by day, and why seasonality matters.

From the coast, you head inland to the hills where txakoli vineyards cling to steep, terraced slopes. At a small, family-run winery, you see how this lightly sparkling white wine is made from native grapes shaped by Atlantic weather. The tasting is informal and direct, focused on method, land, and continuity.

Cider, or sagardoa, carries an equally deep history. Present in Basque rural and maritime life since at least the 11th century, it anchors a social ritual built around shared tables and long meals. This special experience takes you off the beaten path into the world of a truly local family in Lunlunta, Mendoza. For over 30 years, Juan Marcos Juricich — a softly spoken agronomist and beekeeper — has lived and worked on this small finca with his children, who now help him run the place. Upon arrival, you'll explore the estate with Federico, the youngest son and a winemaker who produces organic wine from grapes lovingly grown on the family plot. You'll sample his latest blends fresh from the tanks and, if you like what you taste, you can even bottle your own wine to take home. 

Through Federico, you will learn about Juan's storied beekeeping and organic honey production methods. There is a chance to try the honey and, depending on the season, hold the hives. To wrap up the experience, Federico will fire up the parrilla for a home-cooked asado, served under the trees with laughter, stories, and wine. This is not a show. It’s a slice of Mendoza life — shared the way it’s always been.

The monastery was established in the mid-12th century by Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, as a gift to the Cistercian Order’s leader, Bernard of Clairvaux—one of the most powerful European figures of the time—in exchange for spiritual, economic, and political support.

Alcobaça was built according to Cistercian principles: simple, austere architectural lines, without interior decoration or images. Nevertheless, by the early 14th century, it had become the richest and most influential monastery in Portugal, largely due to the Cistercians’ innovations in agricultural technology and land management. The church and its surrounding structures are considered the best-preserved example of Cistercian architecture in Europe.

The church and monastery were the first Gothic buildings in Portugal. Construction of the complex was completed in the 13th century, although it received several later artistic additions in the Manueline and Baroque styles—such as the 16th-century cloisters and sacristy, and later, the 18th-century church towers, elaborate altarpieces, sculptures, and tile panels.

Inside the church are the unique Gothic tombs of King Pedro I and his mistress, Inês de Castro—central figures in a tragic love story that culminated in the murder of Inês by Pedro’s father, King Afonso IV.

Athens in Three Acts

3 days in Athens exploring art, cuisine, the acropolis of Athens, Greek traditions, and rebetiko.

Pyrgos is a trendy hilltop medieval village. It’s full of little winding, narrow streets constructed haphazardly on the hills alongside multi-colored houses and doors. We lose our way several times and keep looping back to the same point .. using that as an excuse to check out yet another local art gallery constructed unobtrusively into the hillside. 

During the 15th and 16th century, the locals defended themselves from pirates by erecting kastelias .. fortified buildings. Pyrgos has the best example of these medieval buildings on the island. It also has the oldest churches.

We stop at a home with a large blue door .. and the views are stunning but give an impression that Santorini is flat and covered by vineyards instead of being a caldera. 

The one fascinating feature of homes here is a long, deep chimney for ventilation. And the strong winds make howling noises through the chimneys.

In Pyrgos, we visited vineyards ... but that’s a different story.

Veiled Christ

Shibuya Crossing, or Shibuya Scramble Crossing, is a popular scramble crossing in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.[1] It is located in front of the Shibuya Station Hachikō exit and stops vehicles in all directions to allow pedestrians to inundate the entire intersection. The statue of Hachikō, between the station and the intersection, is a common meeting place and almost always crowded.

Three large TV screens mounted on nearby buildings overlook the crossing, as well as many advertising signs. The Starbucks store overlooking the crossing is also one of the busiest in the world. Its heavy traffic and inundation of advertising have led to it being compared to the Times Square intersection in New York City and Piccadilly Circus intersection in London.
