Chile

This experience is a cultural commentary on Chilean textiles from past to present and an opportunity to purchase unique souvenirs under the guidance of a local entrepreneur with a globally successful loom weaving brand merging tradition and innovation. The itinerary spans four locations in downtown Santiago, each accessed by metro during this outing.

Upon meeting your host, Flor, at La Moneda Cultural Center you will view the current textile and handicraft expositions and learn about traditional weaving styles still prevalent in modern Chilean and Andean cultures. Flor will then take you to an ultra-funky yarn store, Revesderecho, and explain about different fibers. The experience concludes at Los Dominicos Craft Village in Las Condes where Flor will facilitate conversations with artisans. Subject to the date of your booking (and your personal preference), you will also visit the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center, a craft market, or a vintage retail complex.

Flor has curated this experience as an opportunity to learn about Chilean textiles in a relaxed context. While visiting at least one cultural center, a modern yarn store, and an artisan village, you will "unravel" the history and cultural significance of textile design and learn how techniques are woven into the fabric of modern-day Chile. Florencia Campos Correa, or Flor, is a Chilean-Spanish textile designer and author based in Santiago. Her business, Ullvuna, is dedicated to portable pin loom weaving kits which are available globally. Much of Flor's inspiration comes from her passion and appreciation for Chilean culture and people. She deeply admires the landscapes and nature as well as the ancient fables she absorbed as a child while traveling every corner of Chile by caravan with her family.

Flor has authored several books packed with vibrant pattern inspiration and projects. Her nature motifs are translated into floral crochet designs published in a British magazine and she has penned a children's story which inspires creativity and entrepreneurship in the youngest of budding designers. 

Portugal

This 3.5-hour immersive walk through rural landscapes in Loulé begins at Ponte dos Álamos, where the road from town crosses into serene open countryside. From here, narrow rural lanes lead through groves and fields, lined with the carob, almond, fig and pomegranate trees that have anchored Algarve's agriculture for centuries.

As you walk, Joana points out the plants along the way — wild aromatic herbs, edible greens, small flowers —that most travelers never look down to notice. You'll learn what each plant is used for, in cooking and in traditional medicine, and how the dryland landscape shaped which plants ended up here.

The trail passes through an organic farm where you'll meet local farmers who continue to grow forgotten crops like cardoon, flax, Indian peas, and several local varieties of chickpea. Here, under a large carob tree, you'll sit down to a degustation of freshly made snacks from home-grown ingredients.

This trail is located near Loulé. If you’re staying outside of Loulé, you’ll have to drive into town, either by renting a car or getting an Uber. 

Amidst sounds of rustling leaves, birdsong and flowing water, this experience focuses on the "forgotten plants" themselves — what's growing along the path and in the fields, and what still gets used in Algarve kitchens that wouldn't appear in any guidebook. Joana, a passionate, self-taught naturalist with deep knowledge of inland Algarve's flora, pauses often to identify plants, point out edible flowers, and bring the landscape's botanical history alive.

This walk provides a rare opportunity to engage with the local ecosystem and understand the balance maintained by traditional agricultural practices. You'll go deep into the heart of Algarvian culture and meet a few people who sustain these lands. The farmers you meet have kept growing crops that most of Portugal moved away from, and their persistence has kept a small, working part of Algarve dryland agriculture alive. Hiking through these orchards offers a peek into sustainable farming practices and their role in Algarve's ecosystem.

From there, you stroll through Bombarda district — Porto’s gallery and contemporary art quarter, visit the site of the long-lost Crystal Palace, and explore key landmarks of 20th- and 21st-century Porto: the bold concrete span of Arrábida Bridge, the renewed Bom Sucesso Market — a reinterpretation of civic food space — and Casa da Música, the architectural icon of today’s Porto that redefined the city’s international design presence.

Bilbao History 101

The Bay of Biscay is famous for its beautiful coastline, beaches, and food. At Mundaka you'll stop off for a panaromic view, which changes dramatically between low tide and high tide. You'll then be taken to the historic town of Bermeo for a walking tour.

Heading inland you'll find two examples of Basque artistry. Santimamiñe is a cave that contains Paleolithic paintings and engravings dating back 14,000. These depictions of bison, horses, and deer give us a glimpse into a prehistoric world. This cave is only accessible April-October. Meanwhile, nearby, in the Bosque de Oma you'll find pine tress painted by Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola in the 1980s.  The geometric shapes, eyes, animals, and colorful forms you'll find here change depending on where you're standing, playing with your perspective in the forest.

This journey captures the essence of the Basque Coast in a way that blends scenery, culture, and cuisine. Mundaka is legendary for being home to one of the longest left-hand breaks in the world, making it a pilgrimage site for wave-riders. In Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the day begins just outside the village at the Monastère Saint-Paul de Mausole, a former monastery that housed the psychiatric institution where Van Gogh stayed from 1889 to 1890. Here, the fields, olive groves, and cypress trees are not distant scenery but the same subjects he painted again and again, within walking distance of his room. After lunch, you continue to Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that opens onto a very different setting. Someone described #Churchill as “the warmest coldest tundra town”. It is a friendly, curious town. It also claims to have 300 days of northern lights. 

Basically, if you happen to be in Churchill on a clear night, prepare to wake up, dress up in layers (quickly), and be enthralled. 

Last Sunday night, when most had turned back in after what looked like an “average” aurora display, we waited and were rewarded with lovely green ribbons and curtains.

The charming, well-preserved streetscapes of the heritage town in Old Lijiang Is perfect for getting lost  The winding streets lure you in - and shops selling Tiquanyin tea, handmade paper, musical drums, souvenirs and food vie for the attention of tourists. 

The Naxi people of Lijiang are proud, artistic and musically talented. It's a matriarchal society, one that I relate well to, and I enjoyed my interactions with the wise women I meet.

In the market square in Lijiang Old Town, groups of Naxi women get together to perform a few dances. There is no clear structure for their activity, and the women seem to be on their own schedule - some leave after a couple of dances, others hang around. Besides their traditional costume, what is common among them is their energy and zest for life.

This was my first time visiting Gigantes Islands, and I was struck by the raw beauty of its cliffs and crystal-clear waters that surround its secluded beaches. There are several islands that you can hop in to and my favorite one is what the locals call the “mini boracay” because the sand sure feels like that in Boracay. Other islands are as equally awesome like the Bantigue sandbar, and Cabugay. We also explored the local neighborhood and sure has its own interesting stories. For one, I discovered that due to the abundance of scallops in the island, there’s a neighborhood that stands on a land area that’s made up of scallop shells that is meters thick! Just imagine how much scallops shells that would’ve taken. There’s a lot to explore but if you just want something that’s relaxed, you can just have a good beer by the beach from sunset til night.

Dario Moreno Street is a charming, cobblestone avenue known for its colorful facades and artistic atmosphere. It leads to the historic Asansör (Elevator), a 1907-built structure designed to connect the lower and upper parts of İzmir with ease. Svalbard & Jan Mayen

We arrive by RIB boat from Longyearbyen, dressed in survival suits, across a choppy Arctic Sea, with puffins and seals for company.

Isfjord Radio on Cape Linné, is an abandoned strategic communications station, with a decidedly interesting past, now converted into a stylish expedition lodge. 

Nothing could have prepared me for the extreme sense of isolation and wilderness. 

Imagine sitting all alone at latitude 79 degrees north and watching polar bears prowling outside the kitchen window. Two days ago, that is exactly what the staff at Isfjord Radio did.  After all, Svalbard’s travel slogan reads: “3000 polar bears, 2500 humans”. 

Hiking into the middle of nowhere, or along the coast looking for 1500-kilo walruses, is done with licensed guides, a couple of mandatory rifles for protection and huskies for company. It is a beautiful, stark landscape, filled with mystery and a sense of the unknown. 

Which direction should we head? Anywhere you want to go, comes the reply.
