Mexico

This cooking workshop takes place in a scenic Indigenous Zapotec town and introduces you to local ingredients and techniques specific to regional tamale-making. You'll be guided by a member of a Zapotec women’s collective that supports local women and their community, along with your guide, who will assist with organization and translation.

During the workshop, you'll get hands-on experience with the ingredients and methods used by the women in this collective to create handmade tamales. Women Supporting Women is a collective founded in the 1990s by Indigenous Zapotec women—many of whom were widowed, single mothers, or unmarried, circumstances that were socially frowned upon at the time. In addition to cooking, the group also weaves wool rugs, producing handcrafted pieces sold in their workshop.

You'll leave with a deeper appreciation for Zapotec cooking traditions and a richer understanding of the historical and contemporary challenges facing this community.

Taking place in a social impact-oriented space, this workshop is located in a traditional Zapotec village relatively close to Oaxaca de Juárez. It not only offers insight into local ingredients and cooking techniques but also supports the core mission of this women-run project, which helps local women and their broader community.

Joined by a host with a long-standing relationship with the organization, you’ll be welcomed into this meaningful space and invited to learn more about local culture and food traditions from a Zapotec perspective.

Proceeds from this experience go toward maintaining the space itself—a safe, communal hub where widows, single mothers, and unmarried women can sell their handmade textiles, host workshops, and take part in personal development courses focused on finance, self-care, and marketing skills.

Ingredients and cooking materials for tamale making are included, and you'll enjoy the results of your efforts. Please note that the ingredients may not be suitable for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets.

You’ll meet at the front doors of the church in town, then walk to the workshop together. Hosted by a Chilean textile entrepreneur, this arts and crafts cultural shopping experience takes place in Barrio Italia. Shared between Providencia & Ñuñoa communes, this vibrant neighborhood is named for the factories built by Italian immigrants during the late 19th century. These days, many workshops remain while young designers and artists have set up camp in trendy independent boutiques. 

Florencia Campos Correa (known for her global pin weaving brand Ullvuna) guides you through these picturesque streets and share the history of Barrio Italia — meeting the famous antique dealers on Calle Caupolicán and calling into the Factoría Italia Cultural Center. A bilingual guide, Flor will introduce you to artisans, craftspeople and designers, facilitating a cultural exchange few tourists experience.

Florencia Campos Correa, or Flor, is a Chilean-Spanish textile designer and author based in Santiago. Her business, Ullvuna, is dedicated to portable pin loom weaving kits which are available globally. Much of Flor's inspiration comes from her passion and appreciation for Chilean culture and people. She deeply admires the landscapes and nature as well as the ancient fables she absorbed as a child while traveling every corner of Chile by caravan with her family.

Then we get to work! After we do the basic prep of our dishes, we put them on charcoal to cook and use the bellows to make sure the fire is hot.

This experience offers a full immersion in the world of washi — Japanese handmade paper — woven into Kyoto’s architecture, rituals and daily life. For over a 1000 years, this humble material has carried story, structure and spirit across generations. Kyoto has long been a center of washi artistry, supplying paper to temples, palaces and traditional arts.

You’ll begin in the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, where you’ll learn about plants that form the base of washi and how the fibers are transformed by hand. From there, Emilie will guide you to artisan studios, offering a close look at traditional techniques and the lived artistry behind them.

Later, you’ll step inside a historic noble residence, where washi-lined walls and shoji screens show how paper softens light and defines space in Japanese design. The walk ends in a curated selection of shops in Demachiyanagi offering handmade washi — a way to see the best in the craft today, and an invitation to take home a piece of enduring culture.

Washi may be everywhere in Kyoto, but without context, it’s easy to overlook. Emilie, a researcher of traditional crafts, helps you see what’s hidden in plain sight — how paper threads through rituals, interiors, and craftsmanship. Her fluency in the language, culture, and material open doors you wouldn’t even know to knock on, translating not just words but values, processes, and small gestures. What might seem decorative becomes, with her insight, a story of continuity—one that connects you to the deeper logic of Kyoto’s design and tradition.

This experience is ideal for curious travelers who want to see how washi shapes light in tearooms, reinforces sliding doors, preserves scrolls, and appears in daily life. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”
