This cooking workshop takes place in a scenic Indigenous Zapotec town and introduces you to local ingredients and techniques specific to regional tamale-making. You'll be guided by a member of a Zapotec women’s collective that supports local women and their community, along with your guide, who will assist with organization and translation.

During the workshop, you'll get hands-on experience with the ingredients and methods used by the women in this collective to create handmade tamales. Women Supporting Women is a collective founded in the 1990s by Indigenous Zapotec women—many of whom were widowed, single mothers, or unmarried, circumstances that were socially frowned upon at the time. In addition to cooking, the group also weaves wool rugs, producing handcrafted pieces sold in their workshop.

You'll leave with a deeper appreciation for Zapotec cooking traditions and a richer understanding of the historical and contemporary challenges facing this community.

Taking place in a social impact-oriented space, this workshop is located in a traditional Zapotec village relatively close to Oaxaca de Juárez. It not only offers insight into local ingredients and cooking techniques but also supports the core mission of this women-run project, which helps local women and their broader community.

Joined by a host with a long-standing relationship with the organization, you’ll be welcomed into this meaningful space and invited to learn more about local culture and food traditions from a Zapotec perspective.

Proceeds from this experience go toward maintaining the space itself—a safe, communal hub where widows, single mothers, and unmarried women can sell their handmade textiles, host workshops, and take part in personal development courses focused on finance, self-care, and marketing skills.

You’ll meet at the front doors of the church in town, then walk to the workshop together. You’re responsible for arranging your own transportation to and from the town, which is about a 45-minute drive from Oaxaca de Juarez city. Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.

Chile

Departing from and returning to the city of Valparaíso, this full-day wine experience takes you to three wineries in the Casablanca Valley. The youngest wine region in Chile is nourished by the cool breezes and morning fogs of the Humboldt Current, thus producing crisp Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc varieties. 

Al Ramirez, a Porteño Sommelier, will accompany you for the entire day. The outing starts with a blind tasting of four wines at the first winery. At the second estate, you will enjoy four organic wines paired with four cheeses. The third and final stop concludes with a four-course pairing lunch. Al will share his insights into Chilean wine heritage and culture, accrued through decades of experience working as a Sommelier. At each estate, he will introduce you to winemakers and serve as a liaison bringing to life tales from the vineyards. Manuel is also a Mexican photographer from the city. He has worked with international media such as The New York Times and is currently contributing to The New Yorker. In 2024, he held his first solo exhibition, hosted by the U.S. Congress at the Capitol Building and funded by Amnesty International and the Open Society Foundations.

In this experience, they combine their photography skills with their passion for welcoming people to their home city and helping visitors experience the best it has to offer. At the edge of Granada’s Albaicín neighborhood stands a factory where Fajalauza has been making pottery the same way for over 500 years. Fajalauza is a living record of Granada’s artistic identity, tracing its techniques to the Al-Andalus period and the workshops once clustered near Puerta de Fajalauza. This ceramic tradition blends Islamic, Iberian, Andalusian influences into a style known across Spain: white enamel, cobalt blue and green glazes, and patterns that echo the Alhambra.

This tour, led by a member of the Fajalauza Foundation, opens parts of the site normally closed to the public: kiln rooms, workshop floors, the small museum where archive pieces sit beside recent works. The glazes echo those used for centuries, often inspired by the Alhambra.

Ceramics here were created for daily use: vessels to carry water, preserve food, identify homes, mark graves. Even now, their forms remain largely unchanged. Few places in Spain hold time, rhythm, and tradition in such balance.

Fajalauza is one of few surviving craft lineages in Spain with unbroken continuity from Post-Reconquista era to the present. Fajalauza tiles replaced originals in Patio de los Arrayanes. Still run by the Morales family since the 19th century, its techniques and motifs—heraldic eagles, grenadine sprigs, blue-green latticework—have remained largely unchanged. The factory’s location, firing techniques, and visual language have endured war, exile and mass production. It is here, in the factory, where each piece begins—still shaped by wheel, hand, story.

The Morales family now runs the Fajalauza Foundation which preserves its legacy. This experience offers access not only to the factory but to the people preserving it. The Foundation’s members guide you through kilns, archives, workshops, sharing their stories. This full-day bird watching excursion is led by a naturalist guide and conservationist who surveys the local population of avifauna and knows all the best spots to encounter resident and migratory species. Karaouine Mosque

The perfect way to view the red pumice layers of Santorini is to walk from Oia to Ammoudi. Just 214 steps down, the going down part was easy since the reward is a meal at one of Ammoudi’s legendary fish tavernas by the sea.

We buy fresh seafood by weight - the classic order of octopus and calamari along with some fish -  and it’s grilled right then and there. The sights and smells of the sea are so familiar and similar - whether in this hidden Santorini cove or at home in San Francisco.

The walk back up to Oia is challenging on a more than full stomach. As we reach the top, we see the setting sun and that makes it all worthwhile.

The Navigli Canals

Philippines

This was my first time visiting Gigantes Islands, and I was struck by the raw beauty of its cliffs and crystal-clear waters that surround its secluded beaches. There are several islands that you can hop in to and my favorite one is what the locals call the “mini boracay” because the sand sure feels like that in Boracay. Other islands are as equally awesome like the Bantigue sandbar, and Cabugay. We also explored the local neighborhood and sure has its own interesting stories. For one, I discovered that due to the abundance of scallops in the island, there’s a neighborhood that stands on a land area that’s made up of scallop shells that is meters thick! Just imagine how much scallops shells that would’ve taken. There’s a lot to explore but if you just want something that’s relaxed, you can just have a good beer by the beach from sunset til night. 

Gigantes Islands

Fez, Morocco, is home to the Jnan Sbil Gardens, a lush oasis in the heart of the city that offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling medina.
