Peru

This half-day experience with women from the Shipibo-Konibo community of the Peruvian Amazon takes place minutes from the historic center of Lima, in the district of Rímac. After a short drive, you step into a living Amazonian culture in an urban setting, spending time chatting with artisan women over a basket of jungle fruits and taking part in an art workshop.

Over the past 25 years, people from the Shipibo-Konibo ethnic group have migrated from the jungle in search of economic opportunities while preserving their traditions, art, and language. Your experience begins with a warm welcome from a local artisan in her home, who introduces you to the meanings behind her intricate designs. These sacred patterns, known as “kené,” are inspired by nature and the life of the Shipibo-Konibo people in the Amazon. You then take part in a hands-on art workshop, learning to paint using natural pigments traditionally made from tree bark and plants.

You might not know that it is possible to encounter the Indigenous cultures of Amazonian Peru in the capital. Migration from Ucayali and other Amazon regions has been ongoing for decades. 

This experience offers a rare opportunity to meet members of the Shipibo-Konibo community in the intimate setting of a practicing artisan’s home. Milagro Campos Llontop, Mila, is a Lima-based cultural guide, artist, and educator with over ten years of experience in heritage interpretation and socially responsible tourism. She studied Drawing and Painting at the National School of Fine Arts of Lima and holds a specialization in Sustainable Tourism.

She has worked at several museums and archaeological sites across Lima as a local guide and educational program designer and is one of the few official tour guides in the city specializing in Indigenous Folk Art. In 2022, Mila founded an art experience project in collaboration with master women artisans from the Shipibo-Konibo Amazonian community based in Lima. Working directly with the president of the community, the project supports cultural revitalization and generates direct economic income for more than 200 master women artisans.

This is a visit to the working atelier of Eli Urpí and Nacho Umpiérrez in Barcelona's old town, a space closed to the public. Fernwayer travelers are invited for an unhurried visit with the artists: a walk through the showroom, time in the studio where pieces are designed, and coffee together over conversation about the work.

As you enter the space, you see finished pieces sit alongside designs still in progress. Eli started by sewing small hats. The work has grown into a body of pieces that sit somewhere between fashion, sculpture and craft tradition. Eli talks about inspirations — traditional Spanish forms, contemporary art, architecture, moments of looking that made their way into the form of a hat or sculpture. You're invited to try on some of the pieces. 

From there, you move into the private studio — an area usually reserved for curators and collectors — where Eli and Nacho show objects, images, references, and the way tradition and contemporary art come together in their work.

Walk or take a taxi to Barcelona Cathedral, then go down Carrer del Bisba and turn into Sant Server. At the end of Sant Server, you will find Baixada de Santa Eulàlia.

Most ateliers of this caliber don't open their doors. Eli and Nacho's studio is not a gallery; it's a working space where designs are made. This experience, offered only through Fernwayer, lets you spend time with the artists themselves.

What you encounter is a genuine creative partnership. Eli is the designer; Nacho is the photographer and creative partner. Elisabet Urpí and Nacho Umpiérrez are partners in life and work. Eli is a self-taught designer and graphic artist; Nacho is a photographer and creative collaborator. They work slowly, by hand, in a studio closed to the public — interested in the meeting points between disciplines, where a hat becomes sculpture, where a photograph informs a design. Their sculptural works are increasingly acquired by international collectors.

Mexico

This is a rare-access, evocative, two-hour multisensory journey into Mexican culture — a private mezcal tasting blended with live music and storytelling. Hosted in the home of Andrea and Juan, the experience offers an intimate setting where tradition, flavor, and sound come together.

Andrea, a mezcal expert with deep family roots in Guerrero, guides you through a tasting of artisanal mezcals, each paired with bites that highlight and deepen the drink’s complexity. Alongside each sip and pairing, she shares stories of agave heritage, cultural symbolism, and personal memory — making every glass feel rooted in place and tradition.

What further sets this experience apart is the live music. Before each tasting, Andrea and Juan perform short musical pieces — drawn from Mexico’s folk tradition — that evoke the landscapes and emotions from which mezcal emerges. These performances act as both prelude and palette, deepening your connection to the drink and the culture behind it.

Andrea is an anthropologist, Master Mezcalier, and singer with over 15 years of experience promoting the mezcal culture of Guerrero through her projects. Her connection to mezcal runs deep, shaped by family traditions where the spirit was always paired with music and food. Since 2010, she has played an active role in elevating Guerrero mezcal on both national and international stages.

Juan Pablo is a traditional music promoter, singer, and composer for film, theatre, and collaborative projects. He is also a dedicated advocate for preserving Cardenche music in Mexico and abroad, helping to keep this rare vocal tradition alive through performance and education.

Chile

This ceramics experience takes place just outside the adobe town of San Pedro de Atacama, in a quiet natural setting with views of volcanoes and the Martian-like plains of the world’s driest desert. A short 10-minute drive brings you to the outdoor workshop site, where host Antonia welcomes you with all the materials needed to create your own stoneware piece using ancestral Atacameño clay.

Throughout the session, you’ll shape a personal keepsake inspired by the desert’s landscapes, plants, and animals—guided by Antonia, who shares insights into the cultural and historical roots of ceramics in the Atacama region. The workshop encourages a slower, more mindful engagement with place and craft.

No previous ceramics experience is needed; Antonia offers step-by-step support. Afterward, your piece will be glazed and kiln-fired, then shipped to your preferred address. The session also includes a light breakfast shared with your host Antonia in this striking desert setting.

Set in the untamed Salt Mountain Range, nature sparks creativity and quiet reflection, while the surrounding silence deepens your connection to the landscape. Antonia has spent the past five years learning from the Licarantai community—studying their traditions and understanding the geological significance of the territory. During the workshop, she shares what she’s learned about this Indigenous group and how their reverence for Pachamama is expressed through their relationship with the land and their crafts.

Antonia works with a type of clay unique to San Pedro de Atacama—formulated by her through adaptations of the ancestral clay once favored by the Licarantai people for its resilience. This clay carries a distinct hue and holds the essence of the world’s driest desert. As she guides you through the process, Antonia shares how each part of the practice—from sourcing the earth to shaping the form—is a quiet act of reciprocity and respect for Pachamama.

Antonia Del Pedregal is a ceramic artist based in San Pedro de Atacama. She has lived in the adobe town for six years, spending the past four creating sculptures and functional pieces inspired by the desert landscape. Antonia preserves Indigenous molding techniques while working with a local clay she has adapted to suit her own style and needs.

Before following her heart north, Antonia briefly worked in advertising and later as a pastry chef in Puerto Varas. Although cooking remains one of her passions, she found her true calling in San Pedro after a chance encounter with ceramics and stoneware. Primarily self-taught, Antonia draws inspiration from the stark landscapes, resilient nature, and connections she has built with the Atacameño community. She is passionate about sharing her craft with visitors, offering a window into the land and traditions that shape her work.

Italy

This experience begins inside San Bernardino alle Ossa, a church like no other in Milan. It holds one of the city’s most unsettling spaces: an ossuary chapel lined floor to ceiling with human bones, creating a space suspended between devotion and disquiet. Created in the 12th century to house the remains from the nearby hospital’s overflowing cemetery, it still evokes questions about death, ritual and memory.

From here, the walk unfolds through the surrounding streets near the Università Statale—an area layered with centuries of medicine, mysticism and intellectual life. You’ll move between old hospital courtyards, academic buildings and silent corners.

Erica shares the background of the ossuary, the district’s layered past, and the thin boundary between science and superstition. Emanuele guides your eye helping you notice the strange harmony of details that define this part of Milan—scholarly and occult, clinical and haunted, forever suspended between two ways of knowing.

Imagination Valley

On a sunrise photo-walk, we are at Piazza San Marco. At 5AM, it’s empty, other than for a few pigeons, and a photo enthusiast like ourselves. And we run across - with tripods - to get to the Canal looking out towards San Giorgio Maggiore Island.

Our objective? To watch and photograph gondolas swaying in the canals of Venice. It’s perfect for long exposure shots. The gondolas and docks are lit up by street lights and the sky has the perfect blend of dark and light.

We then rush over to the vaporetto stand near Europa & Regina Hotel overlooking Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, for another Gondola scene (pictured) while the light is still good.

So, how many gondolas can you get into one frame?

We head out down the Grand Canal to the Rialto Fish Market. Some sellers are packing up after a good morning, but we’re able to get some great shots of everyday life. 

We walk back over Rialto bridge (great for photos of activity on the Canal) back to the hotel for breakfast.

Situated between the historic medina and the bustling port, this spacious, pedestrian-friendly plaza offers a vibrant mix of cafés, restaurants, street performers, and local markets. Whether you're people-watching, enjoying a mint tea, or soaking in the lively atmosphere, Moulay Hassan Square perfectly captures the relaxed, bohemian spirit of Essaouira.

1. The square’s open-air cafés offer prime spots to enjoy traditional Moroccan tea or fresh seafood while watching the ebb and flow of daily life.

Moulay Hassan Square

Pinacoteca di Brera is one of Milan's most prestigious art galleries, housing a significant collection of Italian and foreign art from the 13th to the 20th century. Located in the Palazzo di Brera, which dates back to the late Baroque period and was built on the remains of a 14th-century monastery, the Pinacoteca shares its space with the Academy of Fine Arts. Why is this a cool place to visit?
Historical Significance: The gallery was born out of a political action, distinct from other major Italian museums that originated from private collections of monarchs or noble families. The Brera Gallery was officially established in 1809, although its first collection existed from 1776 alongside the Accademia di Belle Arti, instituted by Maria Theresa of Austria. 

Notable Masterpieces: The Pinacoteca di Brera's collection includes several world-renowned masterpieces. Some of the top paintings housed in the gallery are "The Marriage of the Virgin" by Raphael, "The Feast in the House of Simon" by Paolo Veronese, "Supper at Emmaus" by Caravaggio, "Last Supper" by Peter Paul Rubens, and "The Kiss" by Francesco Hayez. Pyrgos is a trendy hilltop medieval village. It’s full of little winding, narrow streets constructed haphazardly on the hills alongside multi-colored houses and doors. We lose our way several times and keep looping back to the same point .. using that as an excuse to check out yet another local art gallery constructed unobtrusively into the hillside. 

During the 15th and 16th century, the locals defended themselves from pirates by erecting kastelias .. fortified buildings. Pyrgos has the best example of these medieval buildings on the island. It also has the oldest churches.

We stop at a home with a large blue door .. and the views are stunning but give an impression that Santorini is flat and covered by vineyards instead of being a caldera. 

The one fascinating feature of homes here is a long, deep chimney for ventilation. And the strong winds make howling noises through the chimneys.

In Pyrgos, we visited vineyards ... but that’s a different story.

Old Blue Doors

In the heart of Rome stands the Pantheon, a marvel of ancient engineering and architectural genius. As you step inside, the vast circular space, crowned by the famous coffered concrete dome with a central oculus, offers a sense of celestial connection. The harmonious proportions and the play of light through the oculus create a serene and almost otherworldly atmosphere.

2 - The Pantheon has served various roles throughout history, including its conversion into a Christian church. The tombs of renowned figures such as the artist Raphael and two Italian kings are housed here, each adding layers of historical depth to the monument.

3 - Pay attention to the rich artistic details, including the marble flooring and the intricate designs on the walls. The Renaissance additions, including the altar and the paintings, blend seamlessly with the ancient structure, showcasing the Pantheon's continuous influence over the centuries.

4 - The Pantheon offers a unique atmospheric experience, especially when rain falls through the oculus or on days when the sun's rays create spectacular light effects. These moments highlight the ingenuity of Roman engineering and the building's connection to the natural world.

Entrance to the Pantheon is free, but it can get crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. It's advisable to visit early in the morning or late afternoon for a more peaceful experience. Remember to dress respectfully, as it is an active church.

The Pantheon in Rome

The Akrotiri Lighthouse, perched on the southwestern tip of Santorini, is one of the island’s most iconic and scenic landmarks. Built in 1892, this historic lighthouse is renowned for its stunning views of the Aegean Sea and dramatic sunsets. While the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, the surrounding area offers a peaceful and picturesque spot to admire the rugged coastline and soak in the natural beauty of Santorini. 
1. The panoramic views from the lighthouse are breathtaking, offering sweeping vistas of the caldera, the Aegean Sea, and the cliffs of Santorini. 
2. The sunset experience here rivals that of Oia, but with far fewer crowds, making it a more tranquil and intimate spot to watch the day end. 
3. The lighthouse is a historic landmark, representing one of Greece’s oldest and most beautiful lighthouses, with its classic whitewashed design blending harmoniously with the rugged landscape. 
4. The surrounding cliffs and coastline create a dramatic backdrop, perfect for photography and quiet reflection. 
5. The area is easily accessible by car or scooter, and the short walk to the lighthouse offers lovely views along the way. 
Visitor Tip: Plan to spend 30 minutes to 1 hour at the lighthouse, especially during sunset for incredible views and photo opportunities. Bring sturdy shoes if you want to explore the rocky surroundings and stay for the golden hour to capture the lighthouse and caldera bathed in soft light.

Akrotiri Lighthouse

Initially a medieval fortress, it now boasts the Renaissance grandeur of the Salone dei Cinquecento. A living testament to the city's political, artistic, and architectural evolution. Top reasons to visit:
1- The construction of Palazzo Vecchio, attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, began in 1299. Built over the ruins of the Uberti Ghibelline towers and atop a Roman theater, the palace exemplifies the triumph of the Guelph faction. It has served as the seat of the city council, composed of the Guilds of Florence, and even housed Duke Walter VI of Brienne. The architectural design, initially severe and medieval, concealed sumptuous halls and residential apartments​​.
2 - Created during the Republic of Fra' Girolamo Savonarola in 1494, the Salone dei Cinquecento is the most significant room in Palazzo Vecchio. Originally basic and almost devoid of decoration, it was later chosen by Piero Soderini for grand murals by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti, depicting the Republic's victories. Although these works were never completed, their initiation marked a high point in Renaissance art. When the Medici returned to power in 1540, they transformed the Salone into a symbol of ducal authority. Giorgio Vasari was tasked with its renovation, elevating the ceiling and adding a coffered structure with forty-two panels. The room's decor glorified the Medici family, replacing the original allegory of Florence with a depiction of Duke Cosimo himself​​​​​​.
Palazzo Vecchio, located at Piazza della Signoria, Florence, is open to the public as a museum. It offers various guided tours, some specifically tailored for families with children. The mezzanine level houses the Loeser Collection, and the second floor features private apartments and chambers, including the original Hall of Priors and the Hall of Maps. We spend nearly four amazing hours in the Sand River Circuit in the midst of a spectacular head of grunting wildebeest. Led by “collective intelligence”, these animals complete a 1000 mile loop over the course of a year, and most survive for several seasons of this tough journey! 

When we arrive in the Grumeti Reserves, further south, we find the last few hundred thousand or so wildebeest. Here they are extremely purposeful and move in a single-file. Perhaps they have realized that they are late and will miss out on all the new green grass in the northern plains. They kick up a storm of dust as they move forward with determination - though it is not unusual to see the whole herd running swiftly back if something ahead spooks them. 

It is here that we see the consequences of the ‘battle’ - injured animals or those too weary to complete the journey. This is sad to watch as they will soon become easy prey to the predators. 

Such is the ⭕️ of life.

One Million Wildebeest

The Dom Luís I Bridge and Gaia Cable Car are celebrated icons of Porto, representing the harmony of industrial ingenuity and aesthetic grace.
