You begin the day with pickup from your accommodation in San Miguel de Allende and travel through the scenic highland countryside – with a stop at a historic hacienda - before arriving in Guanajuato, which is shaped as much by geology as by history. Once a major silver-mining center of New Spain, it developed vertically — its narrow streets, stairways, and underground tunnels responding to steep terrain and seasonal rivers.

Accompanied by local guide Cesar Nistal Gonzalez, you explore the city through plazas, alleyways, and former river tunnels that now function as roadways. Cesar explains how mining wealth, colonial power, and later independence movements shaped the city’s physical form.

You visit Diego Rivera Museum, located in the artist’s birthplace, and trace connections between Guanajuato’s working-class history and Rivera’s political and artistic outlook. The pace is unhurried, allowing time for questions, observation, and context, before returning to San Miguel de Allende.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Guanajuato developed as a silver-mining center constrained by steep terrain and seasonal flooding, and much of the city’s infrastructure exists below street level. The route deliberately moves between surface streets and the tunnel system — originally engineered to control the Río Guanajuato — so you understand how geology, mining wealth, and engineering shaped everyday life through the city.
