Greece

This historical walk maps Thessaloniki’s transformation from antiquity to the present day. It begins at the Trigoniou Tower on the northern wall, where sweeping views set the stage for an itinerary shaped by centuries of change. From there, the path along the Byzantine fortifications leads to the monastery of Vlatadon, tied to the memory of St Paul’s presence, before descending toward landmarks that reveal the city’s complex past.

The route descends to the small church of Osios David, where you step inside. It then continues past the Ottoman Alatza Imaret and reaches Saint Dimitrios, where you take time to explore its interior. You then walk toward the Roman forum before arriving at the Rotonda and its early Christian mosaics. Just before entering the Rotonda, you’ll stop for a coffee break.

Then the walk passes past the Arch of Galerius, the Navarinou ruins and goes toward the White Tower and the Statue of Alexander the Great.

Portugal

In a 3.5-hour tour in Alfama and Mouraria — two of Lisbon’s oldest areas, among the few spared by the 1755 quake — you walk through the urban layers of the city’s origins before Portugal existed as a kingdom. You start at the Roman Theatre, viewing the ruins at street level. Then you move through cobbled streets, hills, alleys, courtyards — shaped by medieval and pre-medieval planning — to experience the city’s history.

You see how Phoenician traces fade into Roman foundations, then Visigoths, Muslim urbanism, Jewish quarters, and Christian rule. Mouraria was named for the Moors and holds the memory of coexistence and marginalization. You climb to viewpoints, slip around key structures, and pause for coffee and pastry. The walk ends near Santo Domingos Square, where the medieval tangle of Alfama and Mouraria meets the rational grid of Baixa’s post-quake planning. Catastrophe and belief have continuously shaped Lisbon, the old lines still stubbornly guiding the city today.

Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

1: Historical Evolution: In the Piazza, imagine, Venice in the 9th century, as St. Mark's Square was first established. It wasn't until the 12th century that it expanded to its current size under Doge Sebastiano Ziani. Around you, the Byzantine Saint Mark’s Basilica stands as a testament to Venice's rich history, originally founded in 828 AD to house the relics of Saint Mark, brought from Alexandria.

2: Architectural Marvel of the Basilica: Be awe-struck by the basilica's ornate façades and the intricate mosaics that adorn its domes, the grandeur of which reflects Venice's interaction with Byzantium and the East. The basilica is a harmonious blend of Middle-Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic styles, with Islamic influences evident in its artful display of polychrome marble columns and intricate designs.

Australia

Kakadu National Park is half the size of Switzerland and a real adventure. If you rent a car, you could drive along the road for weeks, camping in different places and experiencing nature in a way you can't anywhere else.

After leaving Darwin in a rented 4x4 jeep, we made the long drive to Kakadu National Park. Take plenty of drinks and snacks with you, as there aren't many stops on the road. Along the way, we visited several refreshing waterholes and waterfalls, had an open-air barbecue, and saw many birds, snakes, anthills, and farmland along the way.

At night we mostly stayed at campsites that provided tents, and the beauty of the night is incomparable. You can hear, smell, and see countless species of animals, from alligators swimming in lakes at night to dingoes howling, to weirdly chirping insects.

We hiked to a hidden waterfall and discovered some hundreds-of-years-old wooden paintings done by the ancestors of Australia's indigenous people. A must-see in Australia for sure!

Camping: Kakadu National Park

Ouzoud Waterfalls

Amfissa, Greece, is home to the Lion of Bavaria Monument, a lesser-known but historically significant statue that commemorates the close ties between Greece and Bavaria in the 19th century. Erected in 1836 by order of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, the monument honors the Bavarian soldiers who accompanied King Otto, the first modern king of Greece, following the country’s independence from the Ottoman Empire. Set against a peaceful natural backdrop, the lion stands as a symbol of strength, loyalty, and the enduring connection between the two nations.


1. The majestic stone-carved lion, resting in a solemn pose, represents the bravery and sacrifice of Bavarian soldiers who supported Greece’s early independence efforts.
