What is this?
Hatice meets you at your hotel to take you to the pier where you board a wooden caique, a traditional vessel that rowed on this water before engines arrived. This private wooden boat cruise lasts an hour, moving slowly on the Golden Horn, the city's harbor for 2000 years; the very reason Byzantium was built where it was. You pass the imperial shipyard on the northern shore, the hills on the southern side. Turkish tea comes with simple breakfast: simit, cheeses, olives.
You stop ashore below Zeyrek and wander through a district of timber houses, spice markets, and almost no tourists, built around Monastery of the Pantokrator. You visit Zeyrek Çinili Hamam — built by Sinan in the 1530s, and reopened in 2023 after thirteen years of restoration. The walk continues under Valens Aqueduct, toward Süleymaniye, and ends over a glass of boza — served with roasted chickpeas — in a shop where four generations have been making it in marble jars. That's the winter version. In summer it's şıra.
What makes this unique?
Hatice centers this tour around a nostalgic morning on the water — rowing past the painted facades of Fener and Balat, then ashore to Zeyrek, where you step from a wooden boat into a district of timber houses, and see a neighborhood just waking up. The hammam is a rare stop — it only reopened in 2023 after thirteen years of restoration.
Most travelers only ever see the Bosphorus; a wooden boat on the Golden Horn is about reliving the past — as this is where Istanbullus went for pleasure. In the 18th century, Nedim, poet of the Tulip court, wrote a song that Turks still know — an invitation to slip away upstream to the gardens at Sadâbâd: "Look, there is a swift caique all ready at the pier below, let us visit Sadâbâd, let us go."
Constantinople was built facing this water — Sinan set Süleymaniye on the hill above it. You spend the early morning on the Horn looking up at the ridge, and the late morning on the ridge looking down at the Horn. Each half is the mirror of the other.
What is the profile of the host?
Hatice Kelek grew up in Istanbul and trained as a licensed cultural guide, with a Master's in tour guiding from Ege University. She works across Turkey in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. History, food, and philosophy interest her in equal measure. She tells history through the people who lived it and the ones still living it: boat captains on the Golden Horn, the family still making boza by hand, people you'll see along the walk.
The caique is handled by an experienced local boatman who has worked the Golden Horn for years — a steady hand, and good company on the water.
What to bring?
Comfortable shoes — Zeyrek is steep and cobbled, and the walk climbs from the shore to the ridge. A layer for the boat; the Golden Horn runs cool early morning. Modest dress in case you step into a mosque: shoulders and knees covered, and a scarf for women.
**The boat depends on the weather. The Golden Horn is sheltered, so most mornings are fine. If conditions look unsuitable or unsafe for sailing, Hatice will cancel 2-3 days ahead.
**Inform Hatice about dietary or mobility restrictions.

Where will we meet?
Hatice will collect you from your hotel. After booking, message her via Fernwayer Chat to confirm your hotel.
The morning ends near Süleymaniye — a short walk from the Grand Bazaar, and close to the tram and metro. Hatice will point you onward, providing suggestions for an afternoon in the old city, or the way back to your hotel.
