What is this?
This is a relaxed, early-morning, 90-minute photography tour inside Almudena Cathedral, one of Madrid's most architecturally striking buildings, concluding with a portrait of you in Jardín de las Vistillas.
Completed in 1993 and consecrated by Pope John Paul II, the Almudena is one of the few cathedrals where neo-Gothic and neoclassical architecture meet a boldly contemporary interior: vivid Neo-Byzantine murals, painted vaulting, Murano stained glass, and ornate stonework, in a space flooded with natural light.
The tour is timed for early morning, before the crowds arrive. With Biniam's guidance, you'll learn to work with that interior light — how it falls across arches — and to compose a frame in a complex, layered space. The session lets you practice each idea as you go, and it works for all levels, but especially beginners, from first-timers to enthusiasts. Afterwards, you'll walk to the gardens for a brief portrait, a memento of a morning well spent to take home with you.
What makes this unique?
This experience is built around looking carefully: at the geometry of the vaulted ceiling, the way colored light moves across stone, the contrast between ornate neo-Gothic detail and the cathedral's unexpectedly vivid modern murals. Going early morning means seeing it without the noise and movement of peak hours, in the kind of quiet that makes interior photography possible.
Biniam teaches in a way that is practical and unhurried with time to try each technique before moving on. That makes the morning work for all levels: enough grounding for a first-timer, enough depth for a traveler who is a photography enthusiast. He specializes in monochrome photography and can guide you through the particular discipline of shooting in black and white — working with light and contrast rather than color — though the session works equally well in color.
The portrait in the gardens at the end is a small bonus: a few minutes with Biniam behind the lens, the cathedral as backdrop.
What is the profile of the host?
Biniam Ghezai is an Italian-Ethiopian photographer based in Madrid, working across travel, portrait, and documentary photography. His deep curiosity and energy drive an unconventional portfolio — from editorial shoots in the city's cafés to intimate street scenes across Spain and beyond. For Biniam, photography is part craft, part conversation: he believes the best images come from genuine connection, and works closely with everyone he photographs — or photographs with.
"I'm not just taking photos, I'm telling a story," he says. His calm, observant approach puts people at ease, whether he's guiding a first-timer or collaborating with an experienced photographer. He specializes in monochrome photography but works with equal confidence in color, and his range across genres makes him well placed to guide any level through the specific challenges of architectural and interior photography.
What to bring?
Wear comfortable shoes for walking. Bring your own camera and lens. Digital is recommended, but Biniam is equally experienced with analog photography if that's your preference.
