What is this?

A special tour to see how Seville artisans use centuries-old techniques and lifelong expertise to produce exquisite pieces for religious events and rituals. Act 1: Bordado (Embroidery): Visit the workshop of a renowned artisan to witness the meticulous restoration of ceremonial vestments and regalia for processions of the Catholic fraternities in southern Spain, mainly centred around Semana Santa (Holy Week). Act 2: Orfebrería (Silversmithing and Goldsmithing): You’ll meet a highly skilled orfebrero (silversmith) and learn about the various stages in creating elaborate embossed silver pieces such as candlesticks and decorative panels for pasos (floats) which carry the religious statues in the Semana Santa processions, all chiseled by hand. Act 3: Imaginería (Wood Sculptures): Seville is famous for the quality of its extraordinarily lifelike statues. We'll visit a sculptor who creates religious imaginería in wood and clay, including for the tableaux of Christ’s Way of the Cross.

What makes this unique?

This tour is carefully curated to unveil the hidden treasures of Seville's history at the heart of of artistic-religious workmanship. Delve into the secrets of traditional "arte sacro" as you visit three exclusive artisan workshops. Each of these studios is dedicated to preserving and evolving distinct crafts that have shaped the city's identity for centuries. These workshops are not usually open to the public, so visitors need a local expert with the right contacts to guide them, to interpret, and to explain the significance of each artisan's work – both historical and contemporary - in the social and cultural fabric of the city. During the tour, we'll take a break at a charming local café, share stories, and discuss the fascinating crafts you've explored.
