What is this?
Explore Portugal’s royal legacy in this guided tour of the Ajuda National Palace and the Royal Treasure Museum. Built after the devastating 1755 earthquake, the Ajuda Palace became the principal residence of the Portuguese monarchy during the 19th century, a period marked by political change and constitutional reform.
Accompanied by an art historian, you move through grand ceremonial spaces such as the Throne Room and Banquet Hall, as well as private royal apartments, discovering how the Portuguese monarchy structured court life. The palace’s interiors reflect strong European influences, expressed through decorative arts, furnishings, and architectural design. You then visit the Royal Treasure, which houses jewels, regalia, diplomatic gifts, and ceremonial objects that once represented Portugal’s wealth, authority, and global reach. The experience ends at the museum’s café, where you stop for a drink and a snack overlooking the Tejo River.
What makes this unique?
Ajuda Palace is one of Lisbon’s former royal residences, yet it offers a distinctly different encounter with monarchy than the palaces of Sintra. Here, the story is about a court navigating change, where power was expressed through order, ceremony, and carefully constructed interiors. This experience differs from standard palace visits by illuminating how ceremonial design, private life, and material culture shaped monarchy in 19th-century Portugal.
The Royal Treasure, housed within the same complex, tells the story of Portugal’s former global reach. Gold from Brazil and overseas trade networks underpinned royal power, and the objects displayed here show how wealth was transformed into symbols of prestige and diplomacy at home and abroad.
In this curated engagement with Portuguese monarchy and material culture, Estela provides the context you need to interpret these spaces and objects with a level of depth and clarity rarely accessible when visiting on your own.
What is the profile of the host?
Estela is an art historian with a master’s degree in Museology and two decades of experience working in national palaces and major international museums. Born and raised in Lisbon, she began her career in Portugal at sites such as the Palácio de Queluz before spending several years in London at institutions including Buckingham Palace and the National Gallery.
Her approach combines her training and experience in visual analysis and historical context, using architecture, decorative arts, and material culture to explain how royal power was expressed and understood. She brings a specialist perspective that connects objects, spaces, and political history into a clear and engaging narrative.
