Serralves: Form & Landscape

Serralves is more than a museum — it is a complete artistic environment. This tour focuses primarily on the museum complex: its architecture, gardens and outdoor sculptures. The buildings and curated landscapes are artworks in their own right. You begin at a café with a conversation about the history of this cultural institution. You explore selected interiors, from one of Portugal’s most remarkable Art Deco houses to the minimalist museum wing designed by Álvaro Siza, with its restrained geometry and white planes. From there, the walk continues outdoors, where you encounter large-scale sculptures integrated into gardens and woodland paths — including works by internationally renowned artists such as Richard Serra, Dan Graham, and Claes Oldenburg, alongside leading Portuguese artists. It is a walk through a park, yes — but with intention: an exploration of how architecture, landscape, and sculpture are staged in dialogue at one of Portugal’s most distinguished cultural institutions.

Rather than covering temporary exhibitions, this experience examines Serralves Park as a permanent spatial composition, enriched by the insider perspective of an architect guide. With Jelena’s architectural background, the focus is on structure, proportion, material, landscape design, and outdoor sculpture. You uncover the ideas behind key contemporary works, explore the layered history of the estate, and appreciate the museum as both a national monument and an architectural landmark designed by renowned Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Throughout the walk, you gain insight into how architects and designers observe, think, and interpret space — seeing the park as a living composition rather than a collection of isolated objects. Jelena’s deep knowledge is key to understanding the role of Serralves as a place where nature, art, and architecture coexist — something that is often hard to grasp when you visit on your own.

With a background in architecture and design research, and a specialization in built heritage and architectural history, Jelena has spent over a decade exploring Porto. Since 2013, the city has been her primary case study, blending her enthusiasm for Porto with an academic focus on sense of place. As a design researcher and former university lecturer in Heritage and Design in Porto, she has spent years studying the stories that shape this remarkable city. Since 2018, she has led historical city tours, sharing her knowledge and appreciation for this vibrant and ever-evolving place with visitors from around the world.
