Here, you start at a family's small winery, where you get a taste of the exquisite wine they make for themselves. You’ll then visit a mid-sized, family-run winery where you’ll get a full run-down of their production - from vineyard to wine - and along the way, get a glimpse of the historic buildings they’ve recovered, before sitting down to lunch with the family. As the sun begins to set, you’ll wind through scenic backroads to a viewpoint offering sweeping panoramas of the valley. The day ends on the water with a private Rabelo boat ride—complete with a regional wine tasting—as you drift along the Douro, taking in its iconic terrace hillsides.

Instead of the large riverside estates of the Douro Valley, you'll be meeting independent producers who cultivate the vineyards on steep slopes and have chosen to bottle and market their own wines in a place where many growers still sell their grapes to larger producers. You'll hear firsthand accounts of life in the valley, its hardships and traditions, and have the winemaker guide you, rather than a distant employee, through every stage of production, from the vineyards and traditional lagares to the ageing barrels beneath their homes, filled with Port. The intimacy of these small estates allows you to explore the entire property, including a beautifully restored family house, offering a rare glimpse into how generations of Douro families lived. Lunch with the family allows space for genuine conversation. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions directly, hear personal stories, and gain an intimate understanding of winemaking in the Douro from the people tending the land.
