What is this?
You'll explore the rugged coast around Cabo Espichel at the western end of the Arrábida Natural Park. It combines wild beaches, a clifftop sanctuary, and a legend that ties the two together.
With a naturalist guide, on this private tour, you drive between stops that highlight natural history and local stories: Bicas Beach, known for surf; Foz Beach, with wide views along the cliffs; Cabo Espichel, home to an early 18th-century pilgrimage church and 150-million-year-old dinosaur footprints; and a short walk down to Ribeira do Cavalo Beach, nicknamed the “Portuguese Caribbean.” There’s no road down to Ribeira do Cavalo; you reach it on foot, which keeps it quieter than the beaches you can drive to.
Breaks include coffee and snacks, and a lunch of local food with wine. The footprints were pressed into a muddy shoreline, then tilted almost upright by the same forces that raised the Arrábida hills. Seeing them run up the cliff face is the high point of a day on Portugal’s western coast.
What makes this unique?
Cabo Espichel is usually a quick stop for the lighthouse and the sheer drop to the Atlantic, and few visitors know where to look for the sauropod trackways below, now protected as a Natural Monument. At Pedra da Mua, one layer holds a clue to how young sauropods lived, and they weren’t the only dinosaurs to cross that ground. Across the bay at Lagosteiros, a second set of prints is around 20 million years younger.
The shrine has a history of its own: from 1430, processions from 30 parishes north of Lisbon made the journey here, the two long wings flanking the square were built to lodge them, and Lisbon’s procession left behind a building you wouldn’t expect on a remote cape. Given you’re with a naturalist, you’re assured that the cape’s other residents come into view too: it is a Special Protection Area for birds, with peregrine falcons nesting on its ledges and migrating species passing through in season.
What is the profile of the host?
