What is this?
This full-day outing takes you to Peru’s Palccoyo mountain range, where you hike among mineral-streaked ridges whose colors come from geological deposits. From viewpoints, look across the highlands while your guide explains how the landscape formed and why this area holds significance for local communities.
With an early pickup from Cusco, the day begins with a simple breakfast before continuing into the mountains. At 4,900 m above sea level, follow a gentle hiking route through a high-altitude rock forest. The walk is moderate and less demanding than Vinicunca, yet requiring steady footing and acclimatization.
During the hike, you take part in a Pago a la Tierra ceremony, an Andean offering expressing gratitude to Pachamama (Mother Earth). Led with context by a shaman, the ritual introduces how the practice continues today within Andean cosmology and the sacred relationship people have with the land. On the return to Cusco, you stop for lunch, as a picnic or at a local restaurant.
What makes this unique?
Palccoyo offers a rare geological and spatial alternative to the better-known, more crowded Vinicunca Mountain. Rather than a single summit reached by a steep ascent, Palccoyo unfolds across broad ridgelines shaped by multicolored sedimentary minerals deposited over millions of years. The pace is leisurely and the terrain is gentle; it allows space for explanation, observation, conversation, and photography without the pressure created by heavily trafficked routes. Unlike other rainbow mountain routes, Palccoyo combines multiple ridges, open terrain, and cultural context without steep ascent.
The Pago a la Tierra ceremony — an ancient ritual expressing gratitude to Pachamama — offers a respectful opportunity to encounter a sacred Indigenous practice and understand how it continues today within Quechua and Aymara communities. During lunch and the scenic drive back to Cusco, you can continue the dialogue with your guide and deepen your understanding of pre-Inca Andean cosmology.
