What is this?
Built on the site of the monastery from which it takes its name, La Merced is a legendary traditional public market in the historic center of Mexico City. This private, intimate food tour is perfect for anyone who wants to experience the true spirit of Mexico City—including its more chaotic side.
You’ll start in the Downtown Historic Center, where you'll meet your host before walking directly to La Merced market. There, you’ll wind through the market’s lively banquetón, or prepared food area, tasting different tacos, quesadillas, aguas frescas, and tamales.
After that, you’ll stroll through the gigantic fruits and vegetables building and learn about—and taste—prehispanic delicacies such as grasshoppers and agave worms. As the market can sometimes be a little overwhelming, your host will make sure you stop to rest. You’ll finish up with a refreshing drink and a snack in a beautiful restaurant—a hidden gem that most visitors won't know about, hand-picked by your host.
What makes this unique?
This private morning food tour is an essential experience for seasoned travelers who want to experience the real Mexico City and taste authentic Mexican flavors, from pre-Hispanic ingredients to beloved street snacks.
La Merced Market is massive—sprawling and complex—and locals would never advise a traveler to visit it alone. This experience, led by a food expert and CDMX native who knows how to navigate its lively maze, is the safest and richest way to explore it. You’ll learn about the market’s layered history, sample some of the best antojitos in town, and stay well-oriented and comfortable throughout.
Not only will you taste everything La Merced has to offer, but you’ll also hear about its past fires, its ongoing importance to daily life in Mexico City, and the neighborhood that surrounds it.
This is an immersive, sensory journey that lets you walk, eat, and learn your way through one of the city’s most vibrant and culturally essential markets—like a true local.
What is the profile of the host?
This experience is led by one of Ángeles’ trusted colleagues—an expert bilingual culinary guide with formal training in hospitality and gastronomy. Part of a small, women-led team, they’re dedicated to sharing Mexico’s food culture with warmth, knowledge, and respect. Your specific guide will be confirmed with you before the day of the experience.
What to bring?
Wear comfortable walking shoes (trainers or boots) and come hungry. In warmer months, we recommend bringing an extra bottle of water to stay hydrated. From June through October, an umbrella is also advised. While your host will ensure your comfort and safety throughout, please avoid bringing valuables, including cameras, and keep your phone and wallet secured in a zippered bag.
