What is this?

This authentic kimono dressing experience is far from the tourist crowds of Asakusa’s polyester kimono rentals. Sheila and Fumiko host you in Sheila's home, a 30-minute train ride from central Tokyo, where you will select a piece from her archive of antique and contemporary kimono — silk and natural fabrics — and be dressed in it for an afternoon that ends with photos in a hidden bamboo grove. The session begins with a consultation, where you explore Sheila's rich archive and choose a kimono that suits your aesthetic and the season's nuances — each piece carries its own history, which Sheila shares as you browse. While your hosts prepare your ensemble, you have tea with cakes or sweets. The dressing itself takes 30 to 40 minutes, with every fold and tie done meticulously. After a few portraits in the home, a private taxi takes you to the bamboo grove. Amid towering stalks and dappled light, you are photographed in your kimono in a setting that gives the experience its closing image.

What makes this unique?

The depth of this experience comes from Sheila herself. A leading scholar of kimono — Professor Emerita, V&A Museum consultant, author of several books — she has spent decades studying kimono not as costume but as a living tradition. Her work focuses on keeping that tradition accessible for future generations, and this experience is part of that mission: when you wear an antique kimono with knowledge of its history, you participate in something still alive in Japanese culture. Rather than the assembly-line style of rental kimono shops, the home setting offers rare access to her personal collection of valuable one-of-a-kind kimono. The consultation moves beyond "which colors suit you" to what each piece signified when it was woven, how the fabric was made, why it works for a particular season. With Sheila and Fumiko, both certified kimono dressers, the pace stays unhurried. Finally, the neighborhood bamboo grove is largely unknown to tourists — a complete shift from the city's pace.

What is the profile of the host?

Dr. Sheila Cliffe is Professor Emerita of Jumonji Gakuen Women's University and one of the leading international scholars of kimono. Originally from the UK and based in Tokyo for over three decades, she holds a certified kimono dresser and teacher license, and has authored several books on kimono. Sheila consulted for the Victoria and Albert Museum's 2020 exhibition “Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk” and contributed a chapter ("Kimono Revolution") to the official exhibition book. She was Ambassador for Tango Chirimen Textiles in Kyoto, writes a regular kimono column for Japan Forward, and appears regularly on Japanese television as a kimono expert. She received the Award for Spreading Kimono Knowledge Internationally from the Society for the Preservation of Japan's National Dress in 2002. Fumiko is a certified kimono dressing instructor with experience dressing clients in both Japan and Los Angeles, with particular expertise in dressing children.

What to bring?

For women, wear an undergarment with a low neckline — your hosts will be working closely with you, and the kimono collar sits low at the back of the neck. Long hair should be tied up or in an updo. Bring your camera or smartphone for photos.
