What is this?
Kaga Yuzen looks nothing like Kyoto's gold-flecked, embroidered silk. Its five-color palette (Kaga gosai) and signature motif of small, deliberate imperfections in nature are a tradition built on restraint, not glamour. Yet the finished kimono is unmistakably elegant — a masterwork of Japanese craft, a designated National Traditional Craft.
Led by Lucy, a Kanazawa resident with a textile background, this experience traces how the craft is made. You start at Kanazawa shrine to learn how the city became a great center for Japanese crafts, a rival even to Kyoto. Next, you visit the Prefectural Museum, for a grounding in the city's crafts and to see Kaga Yuzen's finest examples. Then you go to a working atelier to watch a master paint silk — and to ask questions directly: how the shading is made, or why the leaves look insect-eaten. The walk continues along Tatemachi street, ending at two shops: one selling new Kaga Yuzen silk and finished kimono, the other secondhand.
What makes this unique?
You may have been dazzled by Kyoto textiles like Nishijin woven silk shimmering with gold. This experience makes the case for its quieter rival: Kaga Yuzen skips gold leaf and embroidery entirely, letting dye alone carry a hand-painted, realistic world in five predetermined colors. Seeing the essence of Kaga Yuzen explained in a museum, then made in an atelier, then handled in two different shops, gives the craft a story and coherence that a single stop never could.
The atelier visit is real access, not a demonstration booth: you watch a working master and ask questions guided by Lucy — who came to Kanazawa from textile and costume design in Europe, and who has lived here long enough to know the difference between a shop that caters to tourists and one that local kimono connoisseurs trust.
Ending at a used kimono shop means you see Kaga Yuzen's whole life, not just its showroom moment — fitting, for a craft whose insect-eaten leaves already find beauty in wear, not perfection.
What is the profile of the host?
Lucy lived and worked in France and Germany in textile, fashion, and costume design before moving to Kanazawa in 2019, where her husband is a professor at the local university. She was immediately drawn to the city's human scale, rich traditions, and relaxed pace of life.
As a guide, Lucy keeps her tours easygoing, personal, and conversational. With her background in textiles and design, she is especially drawn to Kanazawa's traditional crafts and the craftsmanship, creativity, and stories behind them. She hopes to create meaningful experiences for travelers while giving back to the local community and supporting traditional crafts and small businesses.
When she's not guiding, Lucy enjoys exploring Kanazawa and the wider Hokuriku region, discovering new crafts, diving deeper into the culture, and spending time in nature. She looks forward to welcoming guests and sharing the Kanazawa she has come to love.
