What is this?
In the side streets of Tokyo's Kagurazaka neighborhood — a historic district with traditional roots that has also taken on a multicultural identity as the city's French Quarter — artist Hikosaburo Oda has taken a centuries-old traditional craft and reimagined it for the 21st century.
Tsumami-zaiku originated in Edo-period Japan, using thin silks like habutae folded with bamboo tweezers into intricate shapes. The technique has long produced the elaborate hair ornaments worn by maiko, the apprentice geisha of Kyoto. For centuries, the materials and methods remained essentially unchanged.
Hikosaburo invented and trademarked a new technique — Triple-Layer Tsumami® — that allows the use of thicker textiles like Nishijin-ori silk and bolder contemporary expressions of the craft. In this experience, she guides you through her process, and you leave with a deep understanding of the tradition and your own uniquely crafted accessory made with Nishijin-ori silk to be worn as brooch or hairpin.
What makes this unique?
Hikosaburo has been working in tsumami-zaiku since 2008, when she startled traditional audiences with avant-garde color compositions that found their way into contemporary fashion. Her work has since been exhibited in Paris and shown on the runway at Tokyo Fashion Week. Her enthusiasm for the craft is evident as she teaches you the steps for making your own handmade accessory with her trademarked Triple-Layer Tsumami® technique.
Choose from a wide variety of traditional and modern silks from her collection, some of which are remnants of vintage kimono and effectively one-of-a-kind. Time spent working on your piece extends into a conversation — about Japanese crafts culture, history, and the antique-textile trade. As a licensed antique dealer, Hikosaburo can also share practical knowledge about shopping for vintage and antique goods in Japan.
When your piece is finished, you have the chance to explore her collection of vintage kimono, antique textiles, and Hikosaburo Oda accessories.
