What is this?

The "Blade Runner" aesthetic of Shinjuku after dark, captured under the guidance of a street documentary photographer focused on the quiet friction of Tokyo's human society. Descending into subterranean passages with the tide of white-collar salarymen and navigating the narrow alleyways of the nightlife districts, Yusuke offers real-time coaching in camera settings, composition, and how to find and approach people for street portraits. The focus is often on people in motion, in a neighborhood where millions of commuters pass through daily. But Yusuke will also show you a quieter side of Shinjuku, where you can compose static shots of neon or catch a thoughtful moment in the eyes of a stranger. After two hours of shooting, the experience moves to a local haunt for a drink and a snack. Here Yusuke helps you select your strongest shots and walks you through his post-processing workflow, including his personal Lightroom presets tuned for street photography, which become yours to keep.

What makes this unique?

This isn't a simple Shinjuku photowalk but a working session with one of Tokyo’s most respected street photographers. It's focused on producing images you'd actually want to print and hang, or include in a coffee table photobook. Shinjuku after dark concentrates more visual material into a single frame than almost any city — neon, motion, contrast, the faces in the crowd. The challenge is choosing which thread to follow. Yusuke helps you do that, pointing out the moments worth shooting, light against shadow, and how to approach strangers for portraits without breaking the scene. Yusuke also helps you envision night scenes from a publisher's perspective — thinking about images as final work. The know-how goes beyond this single night in Shinjuku; you leave with techniques and editing approaches you can apply to any photo walks afterward. You'll learn a philosophy of seeing, grounded in the credibility of an artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries around Japan.

What is the profile of the host?

Yusuke Nagata is a Tokyo-based photographer and zine maker who documents human society, primarily through street photography. He works in film and darkroom prints. Widely regarded as a Japan street photography expert by international audiences, he founded Tokyo Street Photography Club in 2018 to build a community of street photographers in Tokyo. In 2023, Yusuke launched the community-based brand FAR EAST DARKROOM, an independent platform publishing zines and prints by emerging photographers from Japan and across Asia for a global audience. His work has been featured in Time Out Tokyo, Japan Camera Hunter, and Fisheye Magazine, and exhibited at venues including Place M in Shinjuku and Taiwan Photo. Yusuke's passion and willingness to help fellow photographers dive deep into urban street photography make him the right host for discovering an alternative side of Tokyo life.

What to bring?

Any camera — all levels welcome. Film photographers are welcome too. If you bring a digital camera, you'll be able to get direct feedback from Yusuke on your photos during the break after the shooting session.
