A Brush With Peace

Master calligrapher Eri Koyama takes you on a journey toward peace and contentment with a simple brush and ink. This private experience begins in a peaceful Kyoto temple where she explains the cultural significance of shodo, Japanese calligraphy, and how it has been used as both a form of art and meditation over the centuries. Rooted in Zen philosophy, shodo invites stillness, focus, and a deep connection between mind and body. Next, Eri explains the tools used in Japanese calligraphy, and you'll learn to make your own ink from an inkstone. After introducing the different writing styles, she’ll guide you in practicing the foundational strokes used in each. After a short tea break, you'll choose a favorite Japanese character or word — something meaningful to you — which you'll practice, refining your technique under Eri’s expert instruction. At the end of the workshop, you’ll produce a finished work on handmade paper, a keepsake to display and reflect on long after your return home.

Eri Koyama has practiced Japanese calligraphy (shodō) for over 30 years, studying under renowned calligrapher Shōshū from the age of six. Although she holds a master’s license in the art, Eri approaches each brushstroke with a student’s humility — continuously exploring shodō’s expressive and meditative dimensions. In her workshops, Eri welcomes beginners and enthusiasts alike. She shares not only the techniques of shodō — brush, ink, form — but its capacity to cultivate mindfulness and creative presence. Curiosity about the history and practice of Japanese calligraphy. Comfortable clothes that allow you to sit on the floor, though Eri can also provide a small stool. Shoes must be removed before entering the space, so please wear shoes that are easy to take off and put back on.
