Satoko Naito

What is this?

This hands-on craft experience is hosted a kintsugi artisan, Satoko, who has been teaching the art and philosophy of this traditional Japanese technique in Kyoto for several years. The workshop begins with a relaxing tea time, during which you'll be able to get to know your host and learn about her background in kintsugi. From there, you'll learn the history and aesthetics of kintsugi while handling finished pieces created by your host. As you admire the gold-lined cracks, Satoko will walk you through each step of the process and introduce the traditional tools and materials you’ll use — including some that you’ll prepare by hand. Then, it’s time to practice. You’ll repair a broken ceramic piece using lacquer and real gold powder — that draws the eye to the details. Throughout the session, your hosts offer individual guidance to ensure your piece becomes a personal and beautiful expression of this philosophy.

What makes this unique?

Set in a private room in a Kyoto restaurant, this experience is completely private for you to enjoy the traditional kintsugi process. Your host has extensive experience as a kintsugi artisan and is a dedicated teacher who has introduced international guests to kintsugi through years of patient, thoughtful instruction. Unlike many modern-day kintsugi workshops that have been modified to simplify or speed up the process for large groups of guests, this experience remains true to traditional materials and processes. It’s designed to give you an authentic kintsugi experience using the highest quality natural materials. You will even use real gold powder - which is the traditional material used in kintsugi – so you can achieve the most stunning results from your hard work in the studio. Kintsugi teaches that flaws and breaks are not just part of life, but sites of beauty and resilience — where repair becomes art, and damage transforms into gold.

What is the profile of the host?

Satoko Naito spent a formative eight-year period in Europe and speaks French, English, and Japanese. She discovered kintsugi after that, and for a decade since, she has devoted herself to mastering this art of repair. She regards kintsugi as a philosophy — a poetic expression of imperfection and renewal. Today, she is delighted to share it not only as a craft, but as l'art de vivre (the art of living). Satoko emphasizes traditional kintsugi — using natural urushi lacquer, patient curing times, and deliberate methods rather than shortcuts — to offer students an authentic, slow, and deeply rewarding experience. In this workshop, she ensures you work with thoughtfully prepared materials and receive guidance at every stage. Your finished piece will reflect the beauty and resilience found in restoration.

What to bring?

Nothing is required to be brought for this experience, but please be aware that urushi lacquer is derived from a plant which can cause skin irritation which ranges from minor to moderate. While your hosts take great care to ensure you do not come in direct contact with the lacquer, if you have particularly sensitive skin, please consider whether this experience is appropriate for you or contact the Experience Makers for advice. The host also requests that participants be over 10 years old.
