What is this?
Led by a contemporary art exhibition coordinator and architect, this experience moves through the places where contemporary art became part of civic identity. It begins at the Madre museum, continues through Naples' historic galleries, and reaches one or more private foundations, selected by your host.
The Madre's collection includes artists who exhibited at the MANN or took part in the Christmas installations staged in Piazza del Plebiscito between 1995 and 2009, the years that led directly to the museum's founding. From 1993 to 2000, Naples elected administrations that placed contemporary art and architecture at the center of the city's civic life.
This choice echoes an older one. Centuries earlier, the Bourbon dynasty made the Farnese collection of Roman antiquities, later expanded with finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum, a symbol of Neapolitan identity. Contemporary art became the city's modern answer to that same instinct.
What makes this unique?
Fabrizio is an insider in Naples' contemporary art world. Most of that world is behind doors — private foundations, galleries, the working side of the museums — and what opens them is not a ticket but a career-long relationship. He has coordinated exhibitions inside the Madre itself, worked directly with historic galleries, and collaborated with artists across generations, in Italy and abroad. So he doesn't just show you the art on the walls; he tells you the back-story of how it got there.
Knowing the artists as well as the institutions gives him a sharp eye on what is happening behind-the-scenes in art now — current shows, newer work, the conversations still unfolding. That familiarity is what gives you access others don't get. And there is a thread running through it all. Naples' turn to contemporary art was a choice the city made about its own identity, the way it once made the Farnese antiquities a symbol of itself — and Fabrizio was inside that choice as it happened.
What is the profile of the host?
Fabrizio holds a PhD in Architectural Design and taught at the School of Architecture of the Bari Polytechnic. His research has focused on the relationship between art and architecture. For more than twenty-five years he has worked in Naples and Milan as an independent producer and coordinator for artists, galleries, and cultural institutions — among them the Lia Rumma and Studio Trisorio galleries, Hangar Bicocca in Milan, the Madre and Capodimonte museums in Naples, and Artecinema, Naples' international festival of film on art and architecture. During this time, he has worked closely with more than thirty artists across generations.
It was this work that brought him inside the Art Stations project, alongside figures like William Kentridge, Joseph Kosuth, and Rebecca Horn. As a guide, he offers what that history gave him: an interpretation of Naples through its stones and its people — the artists, architecture, and neighborhoods the works were built into.
What to bring?
