What is this?
This experience follows the Via Appia Antica, one of the earliest and most important roads of the Roman Republic, laid out in 312 BC as a military and commercial artery. Traveling along stretches of original paving, past tombs and ruins that still line its edges, you follow a route that carried armies, merchants, pilgrims, and the dead beyond the city walls.
You descend into the catacombs of San Callisto or San Sebastiano. During a one-hour underground visit, your guide introduces the early Christian communities buried here, explaining carved symbols, frescoes, and networks of galleries. Look for carvings of vines, a sign of communion and continuity.
You continue to a charming working winery with its own vineyard within Appia Antica Regional Park. A private tasting of four organic wines, paired with local cheeses and cured meats, connects directly to the symbolism seen underground. The vineyard is cultivated by a family committed to organic farming on soil shaped by centuries of use.
What makes this unique?
This experience connects layers of history along a single ancient road. Via Appia Antica carries remains of the Roman Republic and Empire outward from the city walls. The catacombs mark the presence of early Christian communities who shaped a new spiritual vocabulary in this same landscape.
Typical group tours present the Appian Way and burial chambers as separate chapters of the past, often with minimal interpretation. Here, the Via Appia is treated as the Romans understood it — a continuous infrastructure and cultural axis. Even the vine that appears underground as a symbol of faith finds its counterpart in vineyards that grow above.
With transportation arranged and catacomb entry coordinated in advance, the day unfolds as a coherent sequence: ancient infrastructure, Christian remembrance, continuing cultivation. Guided by an expert in ancient Rome and Christian archaeology, you move through layers of belief, power, land, and labor have remained intertwined here for two millennia.
What is the profile of the host?

What to bring?
Comfortable shoes and your ID.
** Good to know: This experience includes a one-hour visit to underground catacombs. The spaces are walkable and not extremely narrow, but the absence of natural light and the time spent in enclosed corridors may cause discomfort for guests with claustrophobia.
