What is this?
Step aboard a boat in Porto Lagos and enter Lake Vistonida and its lagoon within Nestos National Park, one of Greece’s most spectacular wetlands. You move across a protected sanctuary where over 260 bird species appear across the year. Dalmatian pelicans, white-headed ducks, herons, flamingos, spoonbills, and kingfishers can be seen across the seasons.
The boat moves through channels and open stretches of this protected landscape, where birds gather and feed. You’ll pass colonies of herons and cormorants. The draw is not only the number of species but the density of life: large flocks gather here in migration and winter, making their flight and reflections across the water part of the spectacle itself.
Midway, you reach the lakeshore for a simple meal prepared outdoors, based on local Thracian recipes, meat or vegetarian, and fresh vegetables from nearby farms. You eat overlooking the water, then return on board and continue your journey across the lagoon.
What makes this unique?
This experience takes you inside an extraordinary landscape still rarely experienced by travelers. Lake Vistonida and Porto Lagos Lagoon have long been protected, and the ecological sensitivity of the route is why it is known mainly to birdwatchers and nature lovers. The wetland is made up of lagoons, reed beds, saline and freshwater marshes, as a result the birdlife shifts noticeably from one stretch to the next. Seeing all of this by boat, from within a living ecosystem, changes your perspective.
As a dedicated birdwatcher, Babis brings years of observation into each outing. His way of sharing knowledge is direct and engaging. With the support of images and explanations, he helps you identify species that might otherwise go unnoticed, and reveals how the wetland works.
The picnic along the lakeshore is an exclusive element for travelers choosing this experience. It offers a moment to sit within the landscape and taste local Thracian recipes, with time for conversation and exchange.
What is the profile of the host?
Babis, a passionate local and dedicated birdwatcher, is your host and boat captain. He navigates Lake Vistonida and the Porto Lagos lagoon on a fully equipped boat that is also accessible to guests with reduced mobility.
His English is not perfect, but his welcoming warmth, enthusiasm, and expressive nature, together with translation tools when needed, allow him to share the wetland with clarity and generosity. He introduces visitors to the bird species that nest and stop here, along with stories drawn from years spent observing the area.
His desire to share this exceptional landscape is matched by remarkable patience. Highly skilled at spotting birds, Babis helps guests identify them even at a distance, using images and explanations while guiding their binoculars until the details come into view.
