This is where the tour starts and ends. Burano is a charming and colorful island in the Venetian Lagoon, known for its brightly painted houses and long-standing tradition of lace-making. Located about 7 kilometers from Venice, a 25 minute water taxi (to be arranged via your Venice hotel) or a 40-minute vaporetto (water bus) ride can transport you to this picturesque locale from Venice. Historically, Burano was a fishing village, and this heritage is evident in its culture and cuisine, with seafood being a prominent feature in local dishes.  You can also stay overnight at Venissa or Casa Burano. It's amazing to wake up early on the island before the tourists get here and wander around.

You begin the day with pickup from your accommodation in San Miguel de Allende and travel through the scenic highland countryside – with a stop at a historic hacienda - before arriving in Guanajuato, which is shaped as much by geology as by history. Once a major silver-mining center of New Spain, it developed vertically — its narrow streets, stairways, and underground tunnels responding to steep terrain and seasonal rivers.

Accompanied by local guide Cesar Nistal Gonzalez, you explore the city through plazas, alleyways, and former river tunnels that now function as roadways. Cesar explains how mining wealth, colonial power, and later independence movements shaped the city’s physical form.

You visit Diego Rivera Museum, located in the artist’s birthplace, and trace connections between Guanajuato’s working-class history and Rivera’s political and artistic outlook. The pace is unhurried, allowing time for questions, observation, and context, before returning to San Miguel de Allende.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Guanajuato developed as a silver-mining center constrained by steep terrain and seasonal flooding, and much of the city’s infrastructure exists below street level. The route deliberately moves between surface streets and the tunnel system — originally engineered to control the Río Guanajuato — so you understand how geology, mining wealth, and engineering shaped everyday life through the city.

This is a full-day photography journey to the high Andean salt flats on the Chilean Altiplano. Located in the northeastern corner of the Atacama Desert near the border with Bolivia, Quepiaco, Quisquiro, and Tara are among the most visually striking and ecologically unique landscapes in the region. These salt flats—salars—sit at elevations between 4,000-4,500m (13,000-14,800 feet) above sea level and are part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve. Bounded by volcanoes and inhabited by flamingos and vicuñas, this is a remarkable setting for both landscape and wildlife photography.

At each salt flat, Mirko will explain the geological features of the wetlands and salt crusts, point out native wildlife, and provide practical instruction on how to photograph it. Because of the high elevation, this tour is best scheduled for your third day or later in San Pedro de Atacama, after you’ve had time to acclimatize.

This experience starts with a thrilling drive through the Martian landscapes of the Atacama Desert. This is a prime opportunity for quizzing Mirko about the region: it's natural history, its cultural legacy, and its wildlife. Salar de Quepiaco, Salar de Quisquiro, and Salar de Tara straddle the border between Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. Brijuni National Park

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

Fes Medina: Bab To Bab

Faroe Islands

Getting there on a little ferry tossed around on the surging Atlantic Ocean needs courage. As the boat uses all her resources to maneuver into a tight, rocky harbor, I wonder if the captain, who does this twice a day, is either extremely brave or completely suicidal. We step on to what looks like the sets of a Disney fantasy movie. Twenty colorful grass-roofed homes, one little schoolhouse - which has one child - and a bridge over the Atlantic.

I meet my guide Harald - a septuagenarian with poise to rival the curious sheep we see hanging precariously over the cliffs. Harald leads our little group on a 4-hour hike across the island to the lighthouse at the westernmost point of the Faroes.

Birds are everywhere - puffins, fulmars, kittiwakes, gannets - on the green hills, riding the ocean waves, occupying every inch of cliff space, filling the air with their calls, and circling the sky.

Beakful of fish

Chile’s Tara Salt Flats (Salar de Tara), located in the Atacama Desert, is a breathtaking, otherworldly landscape of vast white salt plains, towering rock formations, and flamingo-filled lagoons. Situated at an altitude of over 4,300 meters (14,100 feet), this remote destination offers breathtaking panoramic views, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and photographers. The journey to Salar de Tara, through volcanic plains and surreal rock formations, is just as spectacular as the destination itself.

Visitor Tip: Due to the high altitude and rough terrain, it’s best to visit with a guided 4x4 tour. Bring warm layers, sunglasses, sunscreen, and plenty of water to combat the harsh desert conditions.

Tara Salt Flats

Located in the heart of Istanbul’s historic peninsula, Sultanahmet Park offers one of the city’s most iconic and photogenic settings. Nestled between two architectural giants—the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque—the park serves as both a peaceful resting place and a central point for exploring the city’s rich Byzantine and Ottoman heritage. With its symmetrical fountains, tree-lined paths, and flower beds that change with the seasons, the park offers locals and travelers alike a moment of calm surrounded by centuries of history.

1. In the center of Sultanahmet Park, a circular fountain draws visitors toward stunning panoramic views of both the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, especially magical at sunrise or twilight.

Hainan Island

Antalya, Turkey, is home to Hıdırlık Tower, a 2nd-century Roman-era stone tower that stands on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Located at the edge of Karaalioglu Park, this ancient structure has served as a watchtower, lighthouse, and defensive fortification over the centuries. Today, it remains one of Antalya’s best vantage points, offering breathtaking sunset views and a glimpse into the city’s rich history.

Hıdırlık Tower

In Marrakech, explore the labyrinth of the medina, lined with market stalls and craftspeople, and full of secret places and contradictions. 

Anonymous, windowless, fortress-like walls enclose luxurious riads built around tiled courtyards, complete with fountains and gardens.

Happily, my wonderful guide Khadija of Morocco Private Experience, encourages my curiosity. She leads the way across the medieval labyrinth of chaotic alleyways - to the souks where centuries-old skills continue to flourish. 

I am intrigued about how all the craftspeople are clustered together by trade. We watch a metal craftsman shape a pair of gnawa cymbals. A leatherworker allows me inside his workshop for a better view. There is an entire street of ornate lantern sellers - the bronze-latticed lanterns competing with the palm-leafed roofs of the souks in throwing light-and-shadow patterns all around.

Heart and Souk

The perfect way to view the red pumice layers of Santorini is to walk from Oia to Ammoudi. Just 214 steps down, the going down part was easy since the reward is a meal at one of Ammoudi’s legendary fish tavernas by the sea.

We buy fresh seafood by weight - the classic order of octopus and calamari along with some fish -  and it’s grilled right then and there. The sights and smells of the sea are so familiar and similar - whether in this hidden Santorini cove or at home in San Francisco.

The walk back up to Oia is challenging on a more than full stomach. As we reach the top, we see the setting sun and that makes it all worthwhile.

Fish Tavernas

Carved by the Dades River, the Dades Valley is one of Morocco’s most breathtaking landscapes, stretching between the High Atlas and Jebel Saghro mountains. Known as the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs,” this region is dotted with ancient fortresses, traditional Berber villages, and dramatic rock formations. Staying in a guesthouse or kasbah hotel allows for a more immersive experience, and bringing a camera is essential to capture the valley’s stunning rock formations and scenic vistas.
