Morocco

This is a full-day guided trek through the High Atlas Mountains, starting and ending in the village of Imlil. Your journey begins with a gradual climb through Tamatert, a quiet mountain village with stone homes and terraced fields, before reaching the Tidli Plateau at 2,350 meters. This wide-open ridge offers stunning 360° views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, often with no one else in sight. The trail then continues to the Isk Summit at 2,500 meters, offering even more expansive vistas, including sights of Mount Toubkal. 

Afterward, the path continues downhill past terraced farmland and the peaceful Amadin Waterfall—an ideal spot to rest your legs and soak in the mountain air. This experience traces fado through Alfama, beginning above the city at Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, with Lisbon’s roofs and the Tejo spread out below. Over a glass of sparkling wine, Rita sets the context for fado in its original setting: the Lisbon of the 1830s–1840s — port workers, fishing communities, taverns, migration, and night gatherings where poetry was sung.

From there, you meander downhill into Alfama’s narrow streets, following the places and communities that shaped this urban song tradition. The evening ends in a fado restaurant for a live performance, followed by a private exchange with a singer and musicians, facilitated by Rita.  “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”

You can't spend holidays in Barcelona without also visiting the Sagrada Familia. It's probably the city's biggest attraction – and for a good reason. 

La Sagrada, a Roman Catholic church, dates back to the 19th century but is still under construction (some expect it to be finished by 2026, but in my view, 2030 is a safer bet). We opted for a walking tour to the monumental building with high pinnacles, numerous squiggles, and 3-dimensional interior design. Later, during the tour, we discovered the works of art by Sagrada’s architect Gaudi, including Casa Batllo and Casa Mila (La Pedrera). 

The Sagrada Familia is located a little northeast of the city center and is easily reached by metro, bus, or cab. We stayed about 5 hours in this part of the city – as we visited not only the church but also the surrounding area and had some fresh fish to eat in the nearby restaurants. You’ll also find many souvenirs – including miniature La Sagradas, a great gift to bring home!

The Accademia Gallery in Florence, renowned for housing Michelangelo's David, is a treasure trove of art, history, and culture. As the second most visited museum in Florence, it offers a collection that includes a $16 million dollar violin and significant works of the Renaissance and beyond​​. 1 -  As the focal point of the Accademia, Michelangelo’s David is a representation of strength, beauty, and human achievement. Created from a single block of marble, this masterpiece symbolizes the Renaissance ideals of humanism and is renowned for its anatomical precision and the portrayal of David before his battle with Goliath.

2 - The Hall of Prisoners features unfinished works by Michelangelo, known as "Prisoners" or "Slaves". These sculptures were intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II but were never completed. They offer a unique insight into Michelangelo's process, where the figures seem to be struggling to free themselves from the marble, embodying the concept of the "unfinished" in art​​​​.

I am never going to climb a sand dune again. I say that vehemently (many times) as I climb Dune 45.

After 50 long, sand-filled minutes taken to trudge up, here are the lessons learned: Take slow steps. Barefoot works best. One step forward will indeed feel like two steps backward. Don’t stop. Don’t get disheartened if a sprightly guide whizzes past you in an attempt to beat his own 10 minute record. When you have reached the peak and admired the view, scream a joyful “whee-eee” and slide down the side of the dune, marveling at the roaring sound of the minor avalanche that you will create. 

Ok, can we do that again? 

Nearby is Dead Vlei / Sossusvlei. It’s a kaleidoscope of yellow and orange sands and the white of the stunning vlei. Meanwhile, the oryx are vying with each other to position themselves strategically into my shots. They seem to have no issues with climbing dunes. Then again, I don’t see them doing any joyful slides down.

A historically significant site, Mount Srđ played a crucial role during the Siege of Dubrovnik in the Croatian War of Independence and is now home to the Homeland War Museum. Whether you hike up, take the cable car, or drive, reaching the summit is a rewarding experience for nature lovers and photographers alike.

1. At the summit, breathtaking views of Dubrovnik’s terracotta rooftops and the deep blue Adriatic Sea make this one of the best photography spots in Croatia, especially at sunset.

2. The Dubrovnik Cable Car, a quick and scenic way to reach the top, offers stunning aerial views of the coastline and nearby islands on the way up.

3. The Homeland War Museum, located inside Fort Imperial, provides a moving exhibition about the Siege of Dubrovnik (1991–1992) and Croatia’s fight for independence.

4. A scenic hiking trail, about 1.5–2 hours each way, takes adventurous visitors through Mediterranean landscapes, offering a rewarding challenge with spectacular views along the way.

5. The Panorama Restaurant, perched near the top, is a fantastic spot to enjoy local cuisine while admiring one of the most spectacular sunset views in the region.

Visitor Tip: For the best experience, take the cable car up before sunset and hike or drive back down to enjoy different perspectives of Dubrovnik from above.
