The building itself is an icon of modern Mexican architecture — a vast courtyard shaded by a monumental concrete “umbrella,” its single central column carved with mythic reliefs.

Inside, you move through galleries that feel like time slowed down. Among the most famous pieces are the Aztec Sun Stone, a massive calendar disk that encodes the Aztec cosmos, and the colossal Olmec heads carved from basalt. Anthropology Museum

If you choose Chapultepec Castle instead of Museo Tamayo, Andrea will arrange to visit this first — so you can make the climb while the hill is still cool and shaded.

Perched high above the city, the castle commands sweeping views of the valley and stands as a symbol of Mexico’s layered history. Built in the late 18th century, it has served many lives — first as colonial palace, then as residence of Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota during the Second Mexican Empire, and later as official home of Mexico’s presidents. Today, it houses the National Museum of History, where rooms are preserved with 19th-century furnishings, imperial artifacts, and murals tracing the country’s struggle for independence and revolution.

Highlights include Maximilian’s ornate chambers, the Hall of Battles, and murals by Diego Rivera and other great Mexican artists. From the terraces, weather/visibility permitting, you can see the city stretching below — green canopy to skyline.

After your morning exploration through Mexico’s past and modern expressions, Andrea will take you to a restaurant for an extensive lunch where you'll get to try various dishes representing some of the best of Mexico City cuisine.

From there, you visit the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, a remarkable insitution that preserves the experimental studio and public mission of David Alfaro Siqueiros, one of Mexico’s great muralists. Housed in the artist’s former home and workshop, the building still bears the traces of his process — large-scale murals, technical studies, and the curved walls designed for his “Polyangular” method, meant to let art move with the viewer.

You walk the line between art and activism, between creation and conviction — a fitting conclusion to the day.

The afternoon seeks to tie the day’s themes together: Mexico’s art as memory, power, and reinvention. Over lunch, the continuing conversation with Andrea helps you connect the threads — from the mythology of the Anthropology Museum, to the expression of the Tamayo, to the social conscience embodied in the work for modern artists.

Daniel has been working professionally in the Mexican art world since 2002.

He founded Gráfica Zanate in 2007, and the studio continues to produce annual printmaking portfolios in collaboration with artists from Oaxaca, Puebla, Mexico City, and abroad.

Alongside Daniel, the "maestro" of Gráfica Zanate, you’ll meet the studio’s team of experienced local artists: Viridiana Carmona, Marco Patiño, and Marco Antonio Santos.

In her home, where emotions weren’t always spoken, meals became the way to connect, especially with her father, who "doesn't speak feelings but does speak food."

Her passion for food led her to explore the rich and diverse flavors of Oaxacan cuisine, from intricate moles to refreshing tejate. Inspired by this journey, she shares the authentic tastes of Oaxaca in her tours, uncovering the history behind each dish, and offering visitors a deeper connection to the region’s culture in a personal and meaningful way.

This is a rare opportunity to learn about the ancient cultural significance and rich history of candle making in an Indigenous Zapotec community. You'll experience the creative process of a master artisan who is at the heart of reviving this traditional art form in this community. 

You'll learn how these intricate works are made and even try your hand at beeswax flower making. A short overview of natural dyes used in their process will also be included, with a special focus on cochineal—once among the most valuable trade commodities for the Spanish, next only to silver and gold. You'll also discover how these candles have long played a key role in marriage proposals and other local traditions in this village.

Afterward, you'll visit the town church to see the ceremonial candles in situ, followed by a traditional lunch in another town that is famous for their giant tree, which is said to be the widest in the world. 

Maestra Viviana Alávez has been producing handmade candles for over 70 years. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. She and her family—spanning three generations—work with Mexican beeswax, natural dyes, and the same techniques their ancestors used.

No other community in Oaxaca incorporates the tradition of elaborate marriage proposals with candles like this pueblo. In speaking with Maestra Viviana, you’ll gain insight into the realities faced by women of her era in this community, hear about her challenges and triumphs, and understand how both the local culture and her own life have evolved. Juan Pablo is a traditional music promoter, singer, and composer for film, theatre, and collaborative projects. He is also a dedicated advocate for preserving Cardenche music in Mexico and abroad, helping to keep this rare vocal tradition alive through performance and education.
