The Apiary Visit

Francisco I. Madero | Mexico
About
What is this?
The day begins in Mexico City, driving east toward the countryside of Texcoco. Along the way, your guide introduces the deep socio-environmental transformation of the ancient ex-lake — Lake Texcoco's centuries-long disappearance under colonial drainage projects and Mexico City's expansion.
At the apiary, Mariana and Ana begin with a sensory introduction to connect you with the land. You'll step into a professional apiculturist suit to enter the apiary safely, then receive an overview of bee behavior before opening a living hive together to observe the fascinating social structure of the colony up close. Depending on the season, you'll walk the surrounding fields to see the native Acahual flowers in bloom.
The visit closes with local coffee or tea alongside a guided honey tasting.
** Please note: hive openings are weather-dependent and cannot occur in rain.
What makes this unique?
This isn't a passive tour; it's a hands-on dive into biocultural conservation. Instead of watching from behind glass, you put on a real apiculturist suit and stand among thousands of honeybees alongside passionate, trained local keepers.
You will actively engage your senses: smelling raw wax, listening to the vibration of the hive, and tasting pure, unpasteurized Acahual honey straight from the source. Mariana and Ana connect the dots between ancient traditions, modern environmental struggles of the Texcoco basin, and everyday sustainable practices.
The apiary sits within one of Mesoamerica's most important biocultural regions — where the poet-king Nezahualcóyotl once cultivated medicinal gardens, where Aztec agriculture flourished alongside indigenous beekeeping practices, and where the disappearance of the lake has reshaped pollinator ecology over centuries.
You leave not just as a visitor, but as an ally to the local ecosystem and its vital pollinators.
