Feria del Caballo fills the González Hontoria park each spring: some two hundred casetas hung with paper lanterns. At its center is the horse — Pura Raza Española and Cartujana, the Carthusian bloodline bred in Jerez since the 15th century — paraded through the fairgrounds each afternoon by riders in traje corto and traje de flamenca, on horseback and in carriages. Your host brings you into this world, explains the codes, and receives you at a caseta for a full Andalusian lunch with the sherry that is Jerez's own — fino, manzanilla, and the rebujito.

There is flamenco, too — Jerez is one of its cradles, and the bulería was born here. And there is the refinement particular to this feria: the aristocratic sherry families who move along its avenues on their horses.

You will be picked up, driven from Seville to Jerez, and dropped off at your Seville hotel. 

The Feria del Caballo has many casetas that are open to the public. Anyone can walk in, buy a rebujito, listen to music. What you will visit are a few private casetas — the ones that belong to families, sherry houses, and social circles. Lunch in one of them, at a table among the family's own friends, is what Reyes has arranged.

The horse-and-carriage ride is the same distinction. You can watch the Paseo de Caballos from the fence; but what this experience offers is a private carriage inside the procession, moving along the avenues among the riders and enganches of the sherry families.

Jerez is one of the three cradles of flamenco — with Seville and Cádiz — and the bulería was born in the Gitano quarter of Santiago, among families who have passed the art down for generations. What you hear among friends, in a private setting, is the flamenco and the bulería that local families dance to. Reyes's relationships make this possible.

Your host brings you into a private caseta — one of the tents that belong to families, sherry houses, and peñas, closed to those who wander the public avenues. Here you sit down to a full Andalusian lunch: the fried fish and shellfish of the coast, jamón, stews of Jerez, and the sherry that is the city's own.

You'll get an authentic taste of Andalusian cuisine. To sit at that table — welcomed, poured for, drawn into the talk. It is what Reyes has arranged, through a host who grew up there and knows the feria's traditions intimately.

In the afternoon, a private horse-drawn carriage takes you into the Paseo de Caballos — the parade of riders and carriages that fills the fairground each day from one o'clock until the light goes. You ride among the horsemen in traje corto, the women in traje de flamenca, and the enganches of the sherry families, along the sand avenues of the Real.

The horse carriage will pick you up from your lunch caseta. 

Most visitors watch the Paseo from the rail. You are in it — in the midst of living tradition, in a carriage of your own, moving at the pace of the horses among the landós, faetones, and arañas, the classes of enganche that compete in Jerez for one of the most prestigious carriage prizes in the world. The horse is why the fair exists: the Pura Raza Española and the Cartujana, the Carthusian line bred here since the 15th century. From the carriage, you are part of the feria.

The Paseo de Caballos

As the afternoon gets into the evening, there is flamenco in the caseta — not a staged show for tourists, this is the singing, clapping, and dancing that rises among friends when the cante starts. Jerez is one of the homes of flamenco, and what you hear is the bulería, the fast, festive form the city gave to the art.

The bulería was born in the Gitano quarter of Santiago, a few streets of Jerez that have produced flamenco singers and dancers for generations. What happens in a private caseta among a circle of family and friends is not the staged flamenco for onlookers — it is the flamenco a family does for itself, spontaneous, unpolished, and among its own. Reyes's relationships are what open that door.

As the day settles, a tasting of the sherries of Jerez — the fino of Tío Pepe among them. You taste the range the city is known for: the pale, dry fino; the coastal manzanilla; and the older, darker oloroso and amontillado.

Jerez is where sherry comes from — the word itself is the English for Jerez. The fino you drink at the feria is poured cold and young, a mile from the bodegas that raise it under a veil of flor. To taste it here, at the fair, in the city that gives the wine its name, is to drink it at its source — the last, unhurried note of the day before the drive back to Seville.

A Sherry Tasting

You arrive at the González Hontoria park, where the feria is laid out as a temporary city — some two hundred casetas along avenues of sand, hung with farolillos. Your host walks you in, past the casetas of families, sherry houses, and associations, each with its own hand-built façade, and shows you how the fair works: who the casetas belong to, what is happening in the ring, how the day will unfold.

On your own, the feria is a beautiful crowd. Your host interprets the scene and provides context: which casetas are public and which belong to the sherry houses and the peñas; the five historic tents that survived when the city cleared the rest in 1985; the riders in traje corto and sombrero cordobés, and the women riding a la grupa. You learn to see the fair as a Jerezano does.

Walking the Feria

A driver collects you in Seville from your hotel and brings you to Jerez, about an hour each way, and returns you at the end of the day. Jerez sits in the sherry country of Cádiz province, and the feria runs at the González Hontoria park on the edge of the city.

You arrive not as a ticket-holder but as the expected guest of someone who belongs at the feria — driven in and received at the fairground, rather than left to navigate a week when the whole of Jerez turns out. The Feria del Caballo is less known to outside visitors than Seville's Feria de Abril, and the better for it.

Dress: Ladies wear a full-length traje de flamenca, solid or polka dot; if you don't have one, Reyes can advise on sourcing (dresses are made to measure). Gentlemen wear a suit and tie; many men carry the tie and put it on only when entering a caseta.
