This day trip from Porto takes in many sides of the Douro’s territory: mountain landscape, a small local family producer, and an ancestral craft.

Alexandra picks you up at 9 a.m. in Porto, in her own car, and climbs the Serra do Marão to the chapel of Senhora da Serra, at 1,416 meters. The views from the top are extraordinary. This is also where she introduces the geography of the region and the role Marão has long played as a natural barrier between the Atlantic coast and Portugal’s interior.

You then drive down to Santa Marta de Penaguião and spend the middle of the day with a small family producer. He shows you his vines, land, and cellar, pours you some of his wine, and sits down with you and any other family members who are around for a homemade lunch.

On the way back to Porto, you stop in Vila Real to meet one of the few remaining tinsmiths of the region, who still makes the everyday objects of rural Portugal by hand, from sheet tin, as his father taught him.

Alexandra designed this day for curious travelers. Her aim is “traveling with the territory,” meeting the people behind the landscape. The people you meet are chosen for the work they do. The workshop may be untidy, the artisan may speak no English, and the setting may not be photogenic. For Alexandra, that is often exactly where “the deeper Portugal” is found. The tinsmith is one of only three left in Vila Real, keeping alive a material culture that is “rapidly disappearing.”

Your host in Santa Marta is a working farmer, so his days follow the vines; that, she says, is part of what makes the encounter genuine. If he’s needed in the fields, she arranges another small producer nearby. Even the stop on the Marão is about understanding the place, which for Alexandra can be “as powerful as meeting a remarkable person.” And because she translates as you go, each story reaches you with the context behind it.

A light lunch of local products, his wine, and time to talk: “sitting around a table with someone who actually lives and works in the region.”

Alexandra calls this “the main experience of the day”: a meal at a working farmer’s own table.

A Seat at the Table

He learned the trade from his father, who still works beside him, and makes almotolias, funnels and lanterns by hand, cutting, folding and soldering sheet tin. Watch his hands at work and try a step or two yourself.

Tinsmithing flourished in Portugal from the 15th century, supplying ships and later every household. Today few artisans keep alive these “skills that were once essential to everyday rural life,” in Alexandra’s words.

On the way back to Porto, meet one of Vila Real’s last tinsmiths and see an ancestral craft at work.

The Tinsmith of Vila Real

Alexandra picks you up at your hotel in Porto at around 9:00 and drives you herself, in her own car. Heading east, you leave the green country around Porto and Amarante, the land of Vinho Verde, and climb into the Serra do Marão, with the Douro on the other side. She talks you through the territory as it changes, and brings you back to Porto by around 17:30, by way of Vila Real.

Most Douro day trips from Porto take the A4 motorway straight through the Marão, in Portugal’s longest road tunnel, and arrive at the river in Régua or Pinhão an hour or so later. Alexandra takes you over the mountain instead, so you see the two landscapes it divides. She drives, and shares stories on the way.

The Drive with Alexandra

In Santa Marta de Penaguião, a small producer introduces you to his property and his work. You walk his vineyard and the land he farms, and he explains what each season asks of it, from pruning in winter to the harvest in early autumn. Then he takes you into his cellar and shows you how he turns those grapes into wine, at the scale of one family. Alexandra translates throughout.

Most Douro visits center on Régua and Pinhão, down by the river. Santa Marta de Penaguião sits in the hills between Régua and Vila Real, among vineyards that have been part of the Douro wine story since the region was first regulated in 1756, and locals call it the Douro’s best-kept secret. Here you meet one of the Douro’s roughly 20,000 small growers on his own land.

The Vines and Cellar

Weather permitting, you stop at the summit of the Marão, where the small chapel of Senhora da Serra stands, with sweeping views over the Douro Valley. This is where Alexandra introduces the geography of the region, and why this mountain matters so much to what lies beyond it.

It’s the highest point in the Porto district, and well off the motorway route most visitors take into the Douro.
The rest of what was here (the 7°C difference, the Atlantic on clear days, the July pilgrimage) is Alexandra’s to share at the top.
