This full-day birdwatching experience explores the diverse wetland habitats of the Eastern Algarve — the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the nearby Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Marsh Natural Reserve, two of the most important birding areas in Portugal. Starting in Faro or Tavira, you'll travel by car between carefully selected observation points, combining scenic drives with short walks through the different habitats.

Throughout the day, you'll visit lagoons, salt pans, tidal marshes, freshwater ponds, and coastal woodlands that support one of Portugal's richest bird populations. Depending on the season, you may observe flamingos, spoonbills, purple swamphens, avocets, bee-eaters, herons, and numerous migratory waders and waterbirds. The experience also briefly introduces you to the landscapes and traditions of the Eastern Algarve — its fishing culture, working salt pans, and sustainable practices. A traditional local lunch is included during the day.

With a mild climate and sunny days even in winter, the Eastern Algarve has one of the richest concentrations of wetland habitats in southern Europe, allowing you to observe a remarkable diversity of bird species within relatively short distances. 

Pedro has curated this experience to take you through different ecosystems to better understand how tides and coastal vegetation shape birds' behavior and migration patterns. He combines two internationally important wetlands in the route — both Ramsar-listed sites — with observation areas known mainly to local birders. Seasonal conditions constantly change the experience: winter brings large numbers of migratory waterbirds, while spring introduces breeding species and colorful migrants such as bee-eaters and terns.

Led by Pedro, an avid birdwatcher with extensive experience in southern Portugal's ecosystems, this experience focuses on careful observation, habitat interpretation, and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife photography.

The experience begins at first light, with a pickup in Faro or Tavira. As you drive toward the heart of Ria Formosa, Pedro introduces the region's ecosystems, migratory routes, and the day's planned habitats. The landscape shifts from town to farmland to wetland — and depending on conditions, you may make brief observation stops along the route, sometimes for flamingos in roadside salt pans or storks nesting on rural rooftops.


Starting by road allows the itinerary to adapt to tides, weather, and recent bird activity — conditions that change daily and significantly influence what's visible where. The drive itself frames the day, giving you context for the habitats and species you'll encounter, before you've taken your first focused observation.

Set Out from Faro or Tavira

Pedro guides you through different sections of Ria Formosa Natural Park, with short walks and stops at observation points across lagoons, tidal marshes, canals, and traditional salt pans. Depending on the season, species may include flamingos, spoonbills, avocets, purple swamphens — the park's symbol — terns, herons, and migratory waders.

Ria Formosa is Portugal's most important coastal wetland and a major stopover along migratory flyways between Europe and Africa. Over 200 bird species have been recorded here. The variety of habitats concentrated within a relatively small area creates exceptional bird diversity, and the proximity of observation points to the birds themselves means excellent photography opportunities — closer than you'd typically find in wilder, more remote wetlands.

Midway through the day, you'll stop at a traditional local restaurant for a regional Algarve meal — often featuring seafood from the lagoon system you've been observing or salt-cured specialties from the working salt pans of the wetlands. You'll have time to rest and review the morning's observations before continuing east toward Castro Marim.

The lunch ties the day together. The same wetlands that hold the birds also produce the salt, the seafood, and the agricultural foundations of regional cuisine. Eating a traditional Algarve meal with Pedro between the morning and afternoon sites grounds the day's birdwatching in the human and culinary culture that has long coexisted with these wetland ecosystems - and offers opportunities for conversation about the culture and life of the Algarve.

Traditional Algarve Lunch

The afternoon is spent exploring the Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Marsh Natural Reserve, a protected wetland of salt pans, freshwater lagoons, and open marshes near the Guadiana River estuary. The reserve supports flamingos, black-winged stilts — its symbol — pied avocets, spoonbills, marsh harriers, and numerous migratory species throughout the year.

Castro Marim was Portugal's first nature reserve (established 1975) and is a Ramsar-recognized wetland of international importance. The reserve combines ecological depth with historic salt production landscapes that continue to shape the habitat today — salt extraction here uses traditional techniques that work with the marshes rather than against them. Its position between river, marshland, and coast creates a compact mosaic of biodiversity that draws birders from across Europe.

Castro Marim Marsh Reserve

After the final observations in Castro Marim, you'll drive back west toward Faro or Tavira. The route often passes through fading evening light, with farmland and lagoons taking on a different character than they did at dawn. Pedro uses this time to review the species observed, discuss conservation challenges in these wetlands, and share recommendations for further birding in the region or elsewhere in Portugal.

The day's observations come together on the drive back. After hours of focused watching, the return passes through the same landscape with new eyes — you've now learned to read it. Pedro often points out species or habitats you'd have missed in the morning, and the conversation extends what the field experience taught into the broader picture of bird conservation in southern Europe.
