In this full-day hiking tour, you start in the hills above Sarnadas, a rural village in the Algarve. Walk a 10-km circular trail through Serra do Caldeirão, a marked, undulating route through a region few visitors see. You pass orchards, dry stone walls, scrub and grazing paths. This is the meeting point of lowland and mountain — the Barrocal giving way to the Serra. Terraces cut into the schist and shale are shaped by generations of families. From the highest point, sweeping views open toward the Atlantic, offering a contrasting perspective between the countryside and coast.

After the hike, sit down in a village restaurant. Seasonal dishes. Local produce. Tables close together. The welcome is warm, informal, unhurried because it is simply how things happen here in rural Portugal.

In the afternoon, visit a small workshop where esparto grass is prepared and woven by hand. Local artisans demonstrate an ancestral craft rooted in the agricultural past of this region.

Most visitors stay near the Algarve’s beaches. This day moves inland, into Serra do Caldeirão, where small villages and agricultural rhythms continue outside the main tourist circuit, on terrain defined by soil and slopes. The hills — you soon realize — are not scenery but livelihood. The slopes you walk provided resilient esparto grass — a plant suited to hot, rocky ground for rope, baskets, tools, and everyday objects used in local households over generations. Today, only a handful of artisans continue the work of making. In the workshop, you see the fiber prepared and braided by hand, and you make a small piece yourself.

The route gradually climbs to a ridge where, on clear days, the Atlantic appears beyond inland slopes — a reminder of how closely coast and mountain coexist in this region.

Esparto weaving is part of the Algarve’s rural past, but it survives today through a small number of practitioners who continue the craft outside industrial production. The material itself reflects the terrain you have walked — a plant suited to dry, rocky slopes and Mediterranean heat. The workshop completes the day’s sequence: landscape in the morning, village life at midday, craft in the afternoon. The experience is tactile and immediate, connecting hand, material, and place.
