A day in the Ribeira Sacra of inland Galicia, where Miño and Sil rivers cut gorges so deep that vineyards are set on stone terraces first cut by the Romans.

You take a private boat through Meandro Cabo do Mundo, the Miño's most iconic bend, where the river loops back on itself between the villages of Chantada and O Saviñao and the terraced vineyards rise from the water on both sides. Your host explains the region's viticultura heroica — heroic viticulture — where slopes exceed 70 percent and every basket of grapes has been, for 2,000 years, carried up on a back or winched down to the river.

From the water, you continue to a winery for a tasting of signature Mencía reds and Godello whites — bottles from the colleiteiros, the tiny family growers whose wines are the soul of the appellation. Paired with a light lunch of Galician products from the surrounding land. Then a visit to one of the Romanesque churches or monasteries — the sacred buildings that gave the Ribeira Sacra its name.

The Ribeira Sacra is Spain's least-visited great wine region — a landscape of monasteries and impossibly steep vineyards, on the Tentative UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996 and largely unknown outside Iberia. Its wines have been made continuously for 2,000 years: first by the Romans, who called them "the gold of the Sil," and then by the 10th-century Benedictine and Cistercian monks who preserved the terraces and the tradition through the Middle Ages. More than eighty Romanesque churches, monasteries and hermitages still crown the canyons.

The standard way to see it is a public catamaran through the canyons and a walk-in tasting room. What Reyes has arranged is a boat that is private for the ride, a colleiteiro cellar not open to walk-in visits, a monastery visited rarely, and a light lunch of the produce grown on the same slopes as the vines. Everything on the day exists because of relationships she has built with the families who live and work here.

Your host meets you at Ourense station — the Galician AVE terminus — and drives you west into the Ribeira Sacra, roughly 45 minutes through the inland Galician countryside to the village of Belesar, where the day on the water begins. At the end of the day, the same drive in reverse returns you to Ourense in time for the evening train.

You will be met at the Ourense station (or a meeting point in Ourense) by your host. 

The Ribeira Sacra is inland and rural — there is no train that reaches it directly. Everything about arriving and leaving is arranged: pickup at the AVE platform, the drive through the winding roads that lead to Belesar, and a return that lines up with the last Madrid train of the evening.

Ourense to the Ribeira Sacra

A private boat launches from Belesar and takes you through the Meandro Cabo do Mundo, the dramatic bend where the Miño loops back on itself between the villages of Chantada and O Saviñao. From the water, the terraced vineyards rise from both banks in the region's signature viticultura heroica — heroic viticulture, worked entirely by hand on slopes that exceed seventy percent. Your host explains the two-thousand-year history of the terraces as the boat moves through the canyon.

The standard way to see Cabo do Mundo is a public catamaran running the same route on a schedule shared with fifty other passengers. The boat you're on is yours alone — your host, your conversation, the freedom to linger and steep in the view. The private-boat access is what turns Cabo do Mundo into a place you're invited inside by a local resident.

From the water, you continue to a traditional Ribeira Sacra wine cellar for a private tasting of the region's signature Mencía reds and Godello whites — bottles from the colleiteiros, the small family growers whose wines are the soul of the appellation. The tasting is paired with a lunch of Galician products from the surrounding land: local cheeses, cured meats, breads, and produce grown on the same slopes as the vines.

Ribeira Sacra cellars are small, often family-run, and often hard to access. The one you're received at is arranged privately through the relationships Reyes has built over years. You taste the wines at the cellar where they're made — poured by the people who make them, paired with food that comes from within a few kilometers.

Wine Cellar and Light Lunch

The day closes with a visit to one of the region's Romanesque churches or monasteries — the sacred buildings that gave the Ribeira Sacra its name. Most were founded or preserved by the Benedictine and Cistercian monks whose 10th-century revival kept the wine tradition alive through the Middle Ages. More than eighty of these buildings still crown the canyons of the Miño and Sil; you visit one of them, quiet and unhurried, before the drive back to Ourense.
Then you will be dropped off at the station / drop-off point at 8:30 PM.

The monasteries of the Ribeira Sacra are remote, often overlooked in favor of the wine, and typically visited briefly and with a plaque. Visiting one at the end of the day — with the wine and the terraces already in mind — closes a loop that the copy of the day itself has been drawing: the same monks who preserved these vineyards also built these walls, and both are still standing.
