A full day inside El Rocío when the village is alive with one of its great festivals. Your driver collects you from your Seville hotel early morning; you return in the evening. In between, you're invited into a few casas de hermandad and private homes of the village: wine and tapas on arrival, seated lunch at a family table, tapas in another home. Around this rhythm are processions, songs, prayers, or the passage of horses.

Three festival windows are available:

Pentecost (14–17 May 2027) — pilgrimage weekend when brotherhoods that walked the Camino for days arrive at the Sanctuary.

La Candelaria (6-7 Feb 2027) — Feast of Light. Families come to present their children before the Virgin. Deeply symbolic.

La Saca de las Yeguas (26 Jun 2027) — a 500-year tradition. >1000 semi-wild mares rounded up from the Doñana marshes thunder through El Rocío's sandy streets and are blessed by the priest at the Sanctuary. An extraordinary sight — dust, hooves, the smell of the marshes.

Festival days in El Rocío are not tourist events. They are the life of a community that has been visiting the village across generations. Access to them isn't sold — it's given, or not given, by the people whose celebration it is. Visitors typically stand at the edges of the crowd; Reyes's experience takes you inside people's homes.

In Reyes's own words: "Value for being invited into these festivals is not measured in money, but in generosity — in the time they devote to us, the attention, the privilege of being welcomed into their celebration as one of their own. They introduce us to friends, families and the brotherhood, creating a sense of belonging that cannot be staged or purchased."

What she has built is a network of friendships with families who open their homes, and brotherhoods who welcome her guests as their own. She has spent years earning this, and she offers it to you for the day. She ensures the families who host you are properly cared for. The exchange runs both ways.

An afternoon visit to the Ermita del Rocío — the whitewashed sanctuary at the heart of the village, where you'll see the 13th-century statue of the Virgin around which everything else exists.

 Then a visit to another home or two, more tapas, and, as the afternoon deepens, sevillanas sung and clapped by the families you're spending the day with.

The Ermita is open to the public, but seeing it in the company of your host on a day of a festival that has meaning for them, is a different experience than walking in from the street. 

And sevillanas sung in a private home by the people who grew up singing them are not the same music as anything performed for a paying audience.

The Sanctuary and Sevillanas

Your driver collects you from your Seville hotel in the morning. About 45 minutes later, you arrive in El Rocío — sandy streets, whitewashed casas de hermandad, and horses everywhere. 

What you'll find depends on your festival: crowds and processions during Pentecost, families with their children during La Candelaria, or a thousand semi-wild mares thundering toward the Sanctuary during La Saca.

From the moment you leave your hotel, the day is arranged. Where the day goes from here depends on the festival and on the hosts Reyes has arranged to welcome you.

Seville to El Rocío

Your host takes you into one of the casas de hermandad — the houses that Seville-based brotherhoods keep in El Rocío, occupied only during festival days and one weekend a year. Or into his own private home. 

You're welcomed with wine and tapas, introduced to the people in the house - family and friends.

You're entering the house as a guest, not as a visitor. What you see and hear over the next hour is what the family and their brotherhood are doing on this festival day. It happens because Reyes knows the family, and the family has agreed to receive you.

Welcome at a Casa de Hermandad

A ride in a traditional horse-drawn cart through the village — sandy streets, hitching posts outside every house, other pilgrims and residents moving on horseback and on foot around you. During Pentecost this is a moving current of thousands; during quieter festivals, it's the horses and residents of the village going about their day.

During La Saca de las Yeguas, the sequence of events will change slightly to accommodate the arrival and blessing of the horses. 

El Rocío is a village organized around horses. Seeing it from a cart isn't a novelty — it's how everyone in the village moves around.

Cart Ride Through the Village

A seated lunch at the family's table in one of the houses — the meal that anchors any long festival day in El Rocío. Regional dishes, wine, unhurried conversation, introductions to all the family members. You become part of the group around the table.

Everything else in the day flows from this meal. You arrive as guests and leave, after an hour and a half - or two, as friends who have shared a table.

A last, quiet walk through the village as the day settles — a moment to take in what you've seen. Then your driver returns you to Seville, arriving in the early evening.

Good to know: The sequence of stops may change depending on how the festival pans out durring the day - sometimes, there are spontaneous processions and events and it's worth wandering off the schedule to be a part of them. 

You leave with the day still in you. Reyes's guests often say the walk back to the car is when they realize what has just happened — that they were, for a day, inside something most visitors only see from the outside.

A last walk through the village at dusk, then the drive back to your Seville hotel.

If your booking is for Pentecost or La Saca, you'll be surrounded by traditional dress — women in trajes de rociera and trajes de gitana, men in white shirts, dark pants, and often the flat-brimmed sombrero cordobés. You don't need to dress traditionally, but something in that same tone and manner helps you blend in.

La Saca has the earliest start at 7 AM, to catch the horses arriving at the Ermita.
Others start at 10 AM.
