This experience traces Lisbon’s riverfront through Belém, where Tejo (Tagus) River once marked the edge of empire. This district was the departure point for voyages during the Age of Discoveries, when ships sailed toward Africa, Brazil and India.

You begin in a traditional bakery to taste pastéis de nata, custard tarts made from a recipe linked to the nearby monastery. From there, you visit Mosteiro dos Jerónimos — a defining example of Manueline architecture. Its cloisters and church were built with wealth from maritime trade and house the tombs of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões. Cross the lawns toward Torre de Belém, a fortified tower that once guarded the mouth of the Tejo. 

After a wine and oyster tasting — grounded in the Tejo estuary’s long history as a rich fishing ground — you board a private boat along the Tejo toward Terreiro do Paço, arriving at Lisbon’s grand river square. The journey concludes with a ginjinha in hand, facing the water that shaped the city’s history.

At the expansive square known as Terreiro do Paço, you’ll discuss the 1755 earthquake that reshaped Lisbon, the 1908 assassination of the king, and the square’s role in civic life. Then you’ll enjoy a traditional ginjinha (Portuguese cherry liqueur) served in a chocolate cup overlooking the river.

Praça Afonso de Albuquerque

You step into the historic bakery where custard tarts have been made since 1837 using a recipe linked to the nearby Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. After the dissolution of religious orders in 1834, the monastery’s recipe was adapted and preserved here. 

Unlike generic pastry stops, here you are experiencing a recipe with direct links to the monastery just a few minutes away. The tart embodies Portugal’s blend of humble ingredients, monastic tradition, and the imperial-era spice trade.

You step inside the Church of Santa Maria at the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, begun in 1501 under King Manuel I. A defining example of Manueline architecture, its stone vaulting and carved columns display maritime motifs woven into late Gothic form.

You walk across Praça do Império, the broad landscaped square facing the river. In front of the Padrão dos Descobrimentos lies a large mosaic map marking the routes taken by Portuguese navigators across the Atlantic, Africa, Asia, and Brazil.

The plaza allows you to physically step into history—literally standing on the map of empire. Praça do Império

You walk to the exterior of the Torre de Belém, built between 1514 and 1519 under King Manuel I to defend the entrance to Lisbon’s harbour. Positioned at the mouth of the Tagus, the tower formed part of the city’s defensive system while also marking the symbolic threshold of maritime departure.

You won’t go inside the tower, but you have time to appreciate its symbolism and hear its stories from Rita — as a meeting point of defence, exploration, and aesthetics — and understand its role as both a fortress and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon.

Torre de Belém
