Each spring, more than a hundred hermandades — Catholic brotherhoods from Andalusia and beyond — walk to the village of El Rocío, converging on it for the Pentecost pilgrimage. Some brotherhoods depart from Seville itself, walking or riding Camino de Sevilla, an 80-km route through the countryside and the Doñana. The journey takes them 3-4 days.

This experience (May 12 or 13) places you inside one of those brotherhoods for a single day of the walk. After an early pickup at your Seville hotel, you're driven to meet the brotherhood on the route and introduced to your host. You walk alongside them for the day — on sandy paths, in dust kicked up by horses, crossing shallow streams, and resting in a carriage when your legs need it. There are shared meals of potaje rociero and other pilgrim food, songs sung to guitar and hand-clapping, prayers offered along the way. Late at night, once the brotherhood has reached its rest place, you're driven back — reluctantly — to your hotel in Seville.

You cannot typically join the El Rocío pilgrimage as a tourist. Walking with a brotherhood requires membership, and membership requires years of belonging to a Seville parish. What Reyes arranges for her guests is an invitation: a lifelong hermano takes you in as their personal guest for the day, and the brotherhood accepts you on that basis.

The pilgrimage is one of the largest religious gatherings in Europe — nearly a million people arrive on Pentecost — but its character is set on the road, over the days it takes to get there. This is where the sevillanas rocieras are sung until voices give out, where friendships are established over a long walk, and where the devotion to the Virgin is expressed in every step. You see it only because you're inside it.

The privilege is not incidental. Reyes doesn't guide this day herself — she has spent years building the relationships that make an outsider's presence welcome, and the brotherhood member who hosts you does so as a personal favor.

After a short walk to acclimatize to the sun and the pace, you join the brotherhood for a traditional Andalusian breakfast: pan con tomate, café con leche, and whatever else is being served that morning. Cowbells and horse hooves, the creak of wagon wheels, guitars and singing — the road has its own soundscape by now, and you settle into it. You'll be introduced to the families walking with the brotherhood and welcomed among them.

Meals on the Camino are the pilgrimage's real currency — a communal event where the songs start, the day is planned, and the pace is set for the hours ahead. Being invited to join in — introduced by your host, offered food from the family's stores, drawn into conversation about their families and their brotherhood's long history with the walk — is the moment you stop being a stranger. This kind of Andalusian welcome exists in few places in the world; there is no shortcut to it except the invitation Reyes has arranged.

Meet the Pilgrims

A driver collects you from your Seville hotel in the early morning, around 7 AM, and takes you to meet the brotherhood at the point they've reached on the Camino de Sevilla. They set out from the city a day or two earlier; you're joining them mid-route, for one full day of the walk.

You will be picked up from your hotel in Seville - advise Reyes of your hotel details after the booking. 

The pilgrimage looks very different from the road than from the departure or the arrival. In Seville, it's ceremony - and at El Rocío, it's spectacle. Between the two, over three or four days of walking, it becomes a moving community that falls into its own rhythm.

Seville Departure

You continue with the brotherhood after breakfast — walking alongside the pilgrims on the sandy paths, or riding in one of the horse-drawn carriages when your legs need the rest. The pace is set by the oxen pulling the simpecado, the brotherhood's banner. Songs rise and fall along the whole line: sevillanas rocieras sung to guitars, hand-clapping, the rhythms of drum and flute. Cries of "Viva la Virgen" ripple through the crowd.

Whether you walk or ride in the cart, you're inside the music. The sevillanas are sung from the wagons, from the saddle, along the line of walkers, everywhere at once. The whole caravan moves as one thing, slowly, in a way that's impossible to imagine until you're inside it. The pace is deliberate. It is also the pace at which friendships form and devotion becomes something you feel, irrespective of your beliefs.

Continue on foot or by horse-drawn carriage as the brotherhood makes its way toward El Rocío.

Join the Pilgrimage

The walking days include two of the pilgrimage's most iconic moments: the fording of the Guadiamar at Vado del Quema, and the reception at Villamanrique de la Condesa, where the town's own brotherhood — one of the oldest — receives each passing brotherhood at the church. Which one you see depends on which day you book.

Between these, the day has its own rhythm. The caravan crosses small streams, passes hermitages where it pauses briefly to pray, and encounters other brotherhoods walking the same road. At midday, when the sun is at its height, everyone halts under the old olive trees for a long communal meal — traditional Andalusian dishes served by itinerant kitchens that follow the pilgrimage.

Photographs of the Vado del Quema crossing and the Villamanrique welcome appear in almost every account of El Rocío ever published — but they're shot from the outside. To be inside them, you need to be walking with a brotherhood. That is what this experience arranges.

The rest of the day is the version even those photographs don't capture: the meal under trees older than the brotherhood, the pauses at small hermitages, the shared water at a stream. This is the pilgrimage as its known among the brotherhoods.

The Crossings

As the day cools, the caravan settles for a long dinner, followed by an evening around the bonfires — more sevillanas, more dancing, guitars until late. Sometime near midnight, once the day's celebrations have wound their way, your driver returns you — reluctantly — to your Seville hotel.

The evenings are what most photographs of the pilgrimage miss - because this is private time for the brotherhoods. The daytime road is public; the night around a brotherhood's fire is not. You leave when the fire is still going and the songs are still being sung, and part of you stays for the rest of it.

A Pilgrimage Day to El Rocío

You don't have to dress up, but wearing something in the right register helps you blend in — a light shirt with dark pants for men, a long skirt or dress for women.
